Basic Hauptwerk help needed

PostMon Jun 22, 2015 11:12 am

Again, a basic newbie question.
My plan- connect direct to my iMac, 2 alesis vi61 keyboards. Connect up by usb and Midi boutique reeds witches and box of tricks, a refurbed pedalboard. Program a Launchpad to do the stops on the St Anne's organ.
Take audio output from iMac put it through an amplifier and feed 2 speakers of some sort to it.
Will this all give me a usable Hauptwerk system to start me off?
Do I need anything else?
Do I need a midi/audio interface?

Thanks for the continued interest.

(I've moved the topic here for now, since I understand you're currently using the Free Edition.)

Yes -- what you describe sounds fine to me, assuming that your iMac meets our prerequisites:

https://www.hauptwerk.com/clientuploads/documentation/PDF/HauptwerkPrerequisites.pdf
https://www.hauptwerk.com/clientuploads/documentation/PDF/HauptwerkBackgroundTechnicalInfoOnComputerHardware.pdf

... which I expect it would (unless it's quite old).

If you're connecting everything via USB then for maximum reliability it might be best to keep all of the USB devices connected to the computer via a good-quality powered USB hub, since that should ensure that all devices have sufficient power and should hopefully guard against the operating system renaming/renumbering them (and thus having to auto-detect settings for them again).

Not necessarily. The built-in audio output on Macs gives excellent performance (polyphony/latency/etc.) and has pretty good audio quality. For best audio quality you could optionally always add a dedicated audio interface later if you felt the need.

Thanks, Martin. I'll proceed along those lines.
Clearly I will buy a license for the real software as soon as possible!

Hello Boyd ...

I hope that you won't mind me saying, but you are exactly the target audience of my new book on Hauptwerk.
Perhaps you'd like to have a look at this post: http://forum.hauptwerk.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=14329

The book is avail;able now at http://www.lulu.com/kaspencer.

Good luck!

I was thinking someone should write this book! Well done and I'll get a copy with my next organ-playing pay-cheque along with Launchpad overlays!
Thanks,
Boyd

Thanks a lot for that, Boyd.

I really do hope that you find the book helpful and tell your friends about it! It's always quite difficult getting a book known (as with my book "All about your Computer") because publishers only promote best selling established authors.

Your book arrived yesterday - I have read almost all the first half and am finding it very informative and reassuring, having started building my VO with little to guide me apart from some YouTube vids and random posts. It is good to see so much in a single book! I especially like the suggestions for lighting etc and IKEA is going to benefit from this project!
My build so far has been restoring a 110 year old pedal board and Midifying it, learning as I go and even soldering in replacement reed switches when I have broken them. I have found that the positioning of reeds and magnets is challenging but a simple solution was found after some trial and error and the finding of a technical document on magnetic fields around reed switches!
But back to the book - I used to do Proof reading for Anaesthetic texbooks and I'm afraid old habits die hard!
Page 49 - my feet have soles - yours have souls! Love it!!

Many thanks for this book. It came at just the right time for me and my VO project! I recommend it from the POV of a Newbie.

Thanks for the very nice comments, Boyd. I am really pleased that you found the book useful.

Thanks also for pointing out that word-transposition error! It, along with several other little mistakes and typographical problems, escaped the proof-readers - probably because I was in such a rush to get the book out!

Most of the errors have been corrected - if you'd like a copy of the PDF, which has the images in colour (wherever the originals are in colour) just drop me an email to kenneth at kaspencer dot com (directly rather than through the forum or personal messaging) and I'll send it to you asap.

Thanks again for your support
