Uncontrollable crackle and pops noises

PostSat Nov 04, 2017 8:58 pm

Hello, friends.

My setup is a 3K + P homemade VPO, a Mac Mini, stereo pasive audio system, thumb and toe pistons and two swells. Whenever I connect my airphones direct to the Mac Mini, I enjoy the pure sounds of my samplesets, no problems at all. But when I plug my stereo amplifier or my home theater amplifier, in order to enjoy the sound of my speakers, after a while starts the noises I complain above. Even to touch the wood of the console or my body movements increases the level of cracks. It becomes impossible to play that way.

How could I fix it? Thanks a lot and kind regards.

Hello Rafael,

Do either of Hauptwerk's 'audio CPU' or 'audio level' meters on the 'Audio, MIDI and Performance' control panel ('View | Large floating control panels ...') go into the red when the noises occur?

If not, does turning the audio level down a little on that control panel, and/or on your amplifier, eliminate it anyway?

However, if body movements or touching the console wood affect it, then my guess would be that there is some kind of electrical interference issue, or a grounding issue, or similar wiring issue.
Best regards, Martin.

I'll check what you suggest and I'll report here my findings.

I suspect also there is some grounding issue, but I have no idea about how to fix it. And it's a mistery why my airphones sessions runs so well while the problem arises only when I use the speakers. It has been the same with two different sets of stereo amplifier and passive speakers.

Thanks a lot for your insights, Martin

If you have a grounding problem, simply try to connect your speakers to a different power outlet as the rest of your setup. Been there, done that ;)

Or, if they're already on different outlets, try with both on the same outlet.

Hi. It might be advisable to use a ground loop isolator on the mac output. Any issues I have had on stages with computers have always been mains issues with American-bought Macs, which almost always require isolation when they are on mains power (not with windows machines, for some reason).
