sample resolution question

PostFri Jan 20, 2006 6:01 am

hi,

which resolution should i sample my organ stops? sounds simple but the question is quite hard to answer.
all my samples were taken with 36bit 96kHz which takes about 100MB per stop. that is def. too much.
what i agree is that the CD quality 16bit might become too low.
downsampling to 24bit might be a solution but doesn't HW2 store that in 32bit mem size (so, there will be no difference in mem consumption)
what is expecte within the next years for soundcards/monitors?

I would generally recommend either 24-bit/48 kHz or 32-bit/48 kHz (either float or integer formats). There is a user option in Hauptwerk to convert anything with a resolution above 16-bit either to 16-bit or 32-bit. Hence there is no memory saving by using 24-bit instead of 32-bit. If your samples are 36-bit, you may as well use 32-bit, although the difference will be almost undetectable, and more media may be required for its distribution.

Martin.
