Google "convert wav to mp3". There are a wide variety of apps, including free ones, that will do the job.

Thank you. So there is no standard way for doing this? No MIDI to MP3 conversion?

MIDI and mp3 are completely different animals. mp3 (and wav) are audio files while MIDI is (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) a digital "control" system. There are many articles on the net (Google) that you can check into which explain each of them.

OK, I will look into it. I was initially confused because I thought audio files that were recorded via Hauptwerk could be uploaded directly.

Use Foobar2000 ( http://www.foobar2000.org/ )
This is a music player with a lot of standard posibilities. Plays wav, flac, mp3, ape etc and convert them visa versa. Also tags can be added in a simple way.

iTunes has a facility to create an MP3 version of a WAV file (under the "Advanced" menu).

On Windows I use LameDrop. You start the program which opens a small window, then drop the WAV files you want converted on the window, and the converted files are written back into the same directory with the same name but a .mp3 extension. (On first use you need to right click the window to set the conversion quality level you would like.)

Thanks for your replies! I tried already foobar2000, but unfortunately without success, as the program asked for some lame.exe file or so, which I could not find. I will try some other of the options that you gave!

sorry josq, I have forgotten that. Because copyright it is not integrated in Foobar. You can download Lame form http://www.free-codecs.com/download/lame_encoder.htm. All other encoders like Flac, APE are integrated.

If you only will convert WAV to MP3, use LameDrop, mentioned above by Paul. That is the easiest program.

Hi there, it seems I am unable to convert .wav files recorded on Hauptwerk to .mp3, after having tried most of the above programmes. I use Windows 7 64-bit on both the computer dedicated to organ use and my laptop. Upon recording, the items can be played back in .wav, but once the 'convert' command is depressed, it either says "unable to convert" or indicates an issue with the codec player in a pop-up window. I have double-checked that the recording tab is set to 16-bit in "Audio outputs", yet still no success. Advice, please, anyone?

I find that iTunes converts .wav files quite nicely.

You import the file into iTunes. Go up to the Advanced tab and look for "Create MP3 version".

You have to search for that file name outside of iTunes then, but it should be there.

That's what I tend to do.

With "Audacity" the conversion of a file from one format to another is accomplished by "exporting" the file into a different format. Under the "file" menu choose "export", then a pull-down menu appears which offers a range of file formats for the new file which you are about to create. One of those options is the MP3 format, though if you've never done this previously since the initial installation of Audacity on your computer it may be necessary to first download an add-on from the web to allow your copy of Audacity to activate this function. If so, you'll get on-screen advice on what to do. You can then specify where it gets saved to so that it's easy to locate on your hard drive.
