Searching for Psalm 146

PostSun May 05, 2013 4:25 am

I'm hoping one or other of our European colleagues may be familiar with a piece that I have been searching for (literally for more than a decade). Every now and then, something reminds me of it and I try another avenue to find it.

The piece I am looking for is a choral prelude/fantasia ("verwerking") of the Genevan Psalm 146. I originally heard this piece in the context of Psalm 119, since in the South African Free Reformed Church psalter the tune for Psalm 119 is the same as 146. So, is anyone familiar with a late romantic/20th century piece based on this melody? It's not the well-known composition by Jan Zwart; it must be my some lesser-known composer. I would would be forever grateful if anyone was able to help track this down!

Chris,

I think that this is a variation/improvisation of the local organist.

Ps 146 is in Holland used in
- Jan Zwart - Psalm 146
- Cor Kee - Koraalsuite III Psalm 146
- Jacob Bijster - Partite sopra psalmo 146 "Laudate Dominum"
and as an
- entree of the choral in different Dutch choral books like Marco den Toom, Paul Wols, Worp, Landsman, etc.
- improvisation (Piet van Egmond, Pieter Heykoop, etc)

At this moment I cannot remember other Dutch composers with a great Ps 146 works.

I guess it could very well be Cor Kee's composition, played here by Klaas Jan Mulder: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRbx0M5u7tg

You can listen to Jacob Bijster's Partita on psalm 146 here: http://orgelconcerten.ncrv.nl/concert/jacob-bijster

Thank you very much everyone for your help. Alas, as far as I can tell none of the pieces mentioned so far rings a bell (although all very nice). This piece may forever remain a mystery - the recording of the service wasn't running at the point where the organist was playing this, and he has no recollection at all of it! Very strange. Perhaps I will attempt to make a recording of the couple of bars that I have in my memory, hopefully triggering a recollection in someone listening to it.
