Missing Composer Names

It's been a while since I asked this but are there any glaring omissions in the composer's names department?

Whom should I put on the drop down list?

Please include the correct spelling with all accents included.

Format example: Bach, J.S. or Dvořák, Antonín

This will make it easy to cut and paste in with a minimum of error checking for me.

Thanks,

Darryl

Just the opposite ... no Dudley Buck or John Knowles Paine music yet the search shows their names. Maybe delete composer names if there is no music by them to search for

Thx

Just a few names that IMHO are missing:

Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Felix
Hindemith, Paul
Ahrens, Joseph
Schroeder, Hermann
Reda, Siegfried
Homilius, Gottfried August

If possible link the music currently tagged with "other" to the appropriate name in the index so that an index search returns all music by a composer.

Thanks in advance

I have added those names. Most of the listings should be updated as well. Thanks for those.

As far as removing the names goes, I'm going to leave those in for now. One day, when we get some development cash, we'll work on predictive text so that obscure, or as yet unused, composers won't add to super long lists.

It seems like something odd happened when the listings were updated -- for example all those Ahrens posts now are at the top showing they were added today, when they were added in some cases many months ago.

Sorry about that. I'm just glad it didn't happen to the entire 60+ listings of all the composers.

Those should be gone from the front page now.

Darryl,

My suggestion is a bit different. I don't mind adding the names of composers who are not in the list - but I would prefer the "type your own" option to be at the top of the list, not the bottom. The same goes for the organ identifier.

Of course, these are not critical changes but it would be nice to make them the next time you have to make changes anyway.

db,

Thanks for your complaint. It reminded me that I have some great Dudley Buck pieces I have not played in a very long time. I dragged out his "Concert Variations on the Star Spangled Banner", worked it up, and made a recording which you can now hear at Contrebombarde.

As for John Knowles Paine, however ...

There's an intruder / interloper in this list. Please be modest !

Dear Sesuialtera,

It is nice to hear from you again! My apologies if there is a misunderstanding, but I thought this was to add all composers, not just specific? I will certainly have no issue with mine not being put up if the moderator does not want it, but I have seen some names which are quite obscure and unknown, and so I thought mine would be fine since it has those qualities as well :)

God bless!

A suggestion from England: John Ireland (1879 – 1962). “He studied piano at the Royal College of Music in London from 1893 to 1897, continuing at the College until 1901 as a composition scholar, under Sir Charles Villiers Stanford. At the age of sixteen he was awarded a fellowship at the Royal College of Organists, the youngest student ever to do so, and organ was his second study at the College, under Sir Walter Parratt”. The complete organ works are available in the UK from Novello:

I can't quickly find a Youtube post that I feel does justice to the quality of Ireland's organ music (what a pity so many people post videos that seem to have used only the camera's internal microphone - totally inadequate for the complexity of organ sound) - but if I do come across one I'll put a link on this forum. This recording of one of his most famous anthems shows how well he wrote for choir and organ:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sG8CztY5JcI

though in my opinion the organ is too distant - a common fault - sound engineers seem scared to let the organ be heard for the powerful instrument it often is! Classic ending on celestes with (I think) a pedal 32ft.

In the format used on Contrebombarde:
