Copyright for performances on Youtube

PostSun Apr 05, 2015 10:38 am

I've posted four pieces on CH, all with videos that are hosted on YouTube. One of them now has advertising appearing on it if you watch it on YouTube directly, but doesn't seem to appear if watching from CH. It turns out that one or more third parties claim copyright over the hymn tune (Westminster Abbey)for just over a minute of time in the processional.written by Robert Wetzler. The tune was written by Henry Purcell, and the hymn version was composed in the early 1800s. I would think the hymn is public domain.

Has anyone else experienced this? The claimants are unnamed. I can dispute it but I don't want to risk having the claimants shut down my YouTube channel. I can live with the advertising, but it doesn't seem right that unnamed parties can simply lay claim to copyright.

Thoughts?

Disputing takes only a click and takes care of these.

I had a similar case when someone claimed copyright on our performance of a Lord let me know mine end by Maurice Greene. Once i protested the claim was removed.

It's probably fake. There are several fake claimants claiming videos all over youtube.
It's an issue that has been plaguing youtube for years.

Yes, same issue uploading my recording of BWV 659 with a background score taken form imslp.org.
With few clicks and a short note to describe my rights the dispute was closed.

Thanks everyone for your comments. You've encouraged me to dispute the claim. I was concerned that it might lead to a harsh response. The link was quite helpful as well. Thanks again!
