MIDI files on Contrebombarde?

PostFri Apr 22, 2011 3:38 am

Now that Hauptwerk 4 is released and we can record MIDI and play it on any Hauptwerk organ it would be nice to have a website to share our MIDI files. Can we do that on Contrebombarde? If you need help implementing it, I'll be happy to do some website programming.

That's a great idea! almost all my posting are available as Midi-files too. I have no problem with shearing them with anyone who's interested.

I would really love that since I could actually hear some professional-level playing coming through my multiple speaker set up. It would also lead to all of us being able to compare sample sets better. When working with the same midi file, at least that part of the comparison would start from the same basis.

There is a down side to using MIDI for these performances. Remember that the organ is also important! This is already a problem in reproducing pianos - it is much more of an issue on organs.

A recorded MIDI performance can only be recreated in its entirely on a users system if the user has the same organ as the recording artist, with the same MIDI connections, the same voicing, and the same effects processing (if extra processing, such a convolutional reverb, was used).

I, for one, would prefer to listen to the actual sound samples, as intended by the performer - though I can see value in posting the MIDI file in addition.

Hello Les,

Hauptwerk version 4's MIDI recorder/player is very specifically designed so that it's completely independent of a user's MIDI hardware or MIDI settings or combination files, so that it's possible for any user to send a MIDI file to any other user of the same sample set and it will play back perfectly. (The 'MIDI sequencing ...' section in the v4 user guide covers it in depth.)

However, of course trying to play back with different voicing, or with external reverb effects, will make it sound different to some extent.
Best regards, Martin.

a nice thing would be to have the recorded audio as usual, but to be able to optionally download the MIDI file too. Naturally there will be differences when the voicing has been changed or effects have been applied, but I too would really like to be able to play such MIDI files.
BTW, is HW able to simultaneously record audio and MIDI?

Best regards

Yes. It can also simultaneously play and/or overdub MIDI if you want it to.

There are many possible applications for this, from playing Soler 2-organ concertos by yourself to playing "alongside" your teacher even if s/he lives far away.

A good feature to add would be a search tool that would allow one to find those postings which have an available midi feature that could be played by with the new HW playback feature. I am sure that such postings will increase in number. Ed

I thought I should update this thread just in case you didn't know already.

You can now upload your own Hauptwerk MIDI files to Contrebombarde for others to share in.

Don't forget about the other new features as well:

Youtube integration
Facebook Like
Twitter integration
Auto convert your files to MP3
Custom Playlists.... just to see who notices this last one. If you write to me at midisales @ organworks . com, I will send you the link to the beta site.

Not sure why there are only 6 posts on Contrebombare with MIDI file available?
Is this feature of interest to the majority of us?

Hello Paul,
Firstly there does not seem to be a way to search CB for MIDI files.

According to a few musicians who have posted on CB, a few folks have used the available MIDI files'
and then made AUDIO files from them, and then RE-POSTED those same files,
one sounded OK, but the other was bad.
One musician emailed me that he did not want his midi files to be reproduced
on a sample set, that was not voiced the way his was, as they would not sound near as good .

"I hope that we can get beyond this as I look forward to being able to reproduce MIDI files on my
quite elaborate Hauptwerk setup !

Searching with the word "midi" will find them.
