Uploading WAV files to CCH

PostTue Jun 07, 2011 10:59 am

Darryl,

I note (and applaud) the new feature to upload WAV files, as opposed to MP3s. I take it that you are auto-converting the files after upload. I just uploaded a WAV file that I output from Hauptwerk.

Do you do anything to level the output of the files we upload? Should I be tweaking files with Audacity to a target peak level before uploading them? I've set the last few files to a peak level of -5.0 db--but I've wondered if I should a) be using a different peak level, or b) not bothering, because you're doing it automatically at your end.

Thanks!

Hi John,

I recommend normalizing w/ Audacity before uploading, as our converter does not alter the upload aside from the conversion and addition of ID3 tags.

Do you recommend a specific level? (I've been using -5.0 db.)

A good approach is to record a short selection on "full organ" and normalize that to 0 dB. Then normalize all other pieces on that organ the same amount. On my system, for example, I normalize Zwolle +6 dB and St. Maximin +5. That way, the FFF passages don't clip and are at the right level, and the softer stuff is in relative balance. Seems to work fine so long as you don't make changes to the output volume in HW... I just keep a list at the PC of organs and how much to normalize each one.

Cheers.
