(Almost) a Cavaille-Coll in Australia

PostMon Apr 30, 2012 7:15 am

I'm proud to introduce my French style instrument, built to my design by OrgaNouvelle (Gosford, NSW, Australia)

Features include:
- Custom built wooden core manuals
- French language stop names
- Hand made brass toe levers

A special touch is the 2 tweeter enclosures (above the Recit) which feature my initials 'DD' (in the Cavaille-Coll tradition).

The organ sounds as good as it looks (in my opinion).

Very impressive. Would be interested in learning what the internal sound system consists of?

This is really beautiful. It looks like there are larger speakers in the kneeboard, are there? Are the drawknobs moving, or lighted?

Enjoy your console.

Very nice console!

In the panel above the upper manual - are these square paintings or openings through the panel?

I took those to be the custom tweeter openings mentioned in the post.

Very nice work!
How did you make these openings?

Thank you all for your kind replies.

Regarding some of your questions...

Re the audio system
- There are several speakers above the pedalboard, as well as the 2 tweeters above to Recit manual. I am not an expert on audio matters - as I didn't build the organ (it was custom built for me), all I know is that it makes MORE than enough sound in a rather small space. Ian Sell, from OrgaNouvelle (The builder of my organ) felt strongly about the need for 2 high range speakers just below the music desk. I didn't think that two speaker holes would look very stylistic. In the end, we settled on the tracery patterns (which feature my initials). The end result is great. These panels were made with a laser cutter.

Re the drawstops
- They are lighted (with a soft, evenly spread yellow light). Given the console layout, I don't actually think moving drawstops would be very user friendly. Unless they came out a very long way (as on a Cavaille-Coll instrument), it would be very hard to see which stops were drawn.

I'm really impressed by some of the more contemporary set ups with touch screens etc. However, I asked OrgaNouvelle to build me an instrument that looks and feels like a pipe organ in every respect. I'm pleased to say that they have achieved this. Thanks to Hauptwerk, the organ sounds terrifyingly realistic as well (I'm sure my Buddhist neighbour would agree!)

Thanks again for the positive feedback,
Daniel
