New Cavaillé-Coll style HW Console in Budapest (Hungary)

PostMon Jan 19, 2015 11:00 am

Dear Hauptwerkians!

We are pleased to provide an update on our latest completed organ which honours the memory of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, the French Romantic organ builder genius.
The new organ was commissioned by a Budapest church congregation. Major features of the organ:
- 3 manuals, terrace arrangement, Cavaillé-Coll style. Inspiration: Notre Dame de Metz; St. Francois-de Sale in Lyon.
Image
- corpus oak, accessories (drawknobs, pedal sharps) palisander.
Image
- adjustable tracker touch keyboard with optoelectronic contacts
Image

Image

- Kimber Allen moving drawstops (with 25 mm movement), uniquely manufactured drawknobs, porcelain inserts
Image
Image

Image

- we made a duplicate of CC's logo using copper inlay
Image

Image

- CC style, hidden music stand that can be pulled out and opened like a drawer
Image

-CC style organ bench (adjustable height - 100 mm)
Image

- uniquely designed control panel hidden in the drawer

Image

Image

- newly designed display for the sequencer and swell pedal

Image

- uniquely manufactured swell pedal

Image

- Klann toe pistons. Here we had to enter a compromise, as we did not find appropriate foot switches that would have been CC style and could move together with the sequencer. Therefore we used toe pistons with LED response.

Image

- CC style toe piston labeling, protected by glass plate

Image

- sound sample selected by the organist of the church: Notre Dame de Metz - Milan Digital Audio

- PC. Core i7, 16 GB RAM, 240 GB SSD

Image
- sound card: Focusrite Saffire pro 24

The organ was inaugurated on 15 November 2014. I am attaching some sound recordings from the concert. Performing artists:

Wonderful work, with a lot of attention to small details - in particular to the name of the toe pistons, and the good compromise between ease of use and historic appearance fidelity. Congratulations for the very, very nice work! 8)

Just one question from my side - what is the price you are charging for a similar console?

Dear Pat17,

thanks a lot for the kind words, we worked hard for the console to turn out as it did. We aim to preserve the most essential traits of the CC style, and we complemented it with the advantages of HW. We are all very much satisfied with the outcome.
Regarding the price: Budapest and Hungary have become a very cheap destination in recent years when it comes to value for money.

This holds true for organ building as well: the price of the CC console excluding the sound system, assuming the customer opts for the one outlined without alteration, is USD 32,900. This price does not include transportation. Of course we can apply changes if desirable, but that also means new design and planning which increases the costs significantly.

Best wishes
Laszlo

Thank you for sharing. One can see a lot of precision hand details. Very impressive. Could you explain which functions are incorporated in the pull out control panel? Also, any details of the audio system?

Dear Ed,

the functions of the control panel are the following:
-Power Organ: turns on/off the Midi console.
-Power PC: turns on/off the PC and loads the HW. The PC is SSD-based, hence it takes about 35-40 sec for the system to be up and running after switching it on (with the sampleset ND Metz)
-Load favorit organ 1, 2, 3. For the time being only the ND de Metz is installed, but later another two sound samples can be loaded very easily.
-P/I which is Bass Coupler
-Volume
-Fine tuning
-Transpose
-Pitch

Regarding audio: the church is small, with a total of 100-120 seats, therefore we only installed a 5-channel amplifier.
Soundcard: Focusrite Saffire pro 24
Speakers: 4 pcs Deftech BP10 bipolar speakers
1 pc Deftech Supercube Reference (11-200 Hz) subwoofer

Best wishes
Laszlo

Does the PC power on or the Console power on button control the audio system?

I listened for some demos on you tube and the sound is really good, can you specify which amplifiers you used with the BP10B speakers? where are located the speakers in the church?
thank you and congratulation for the wonderful work !

Dear Thomas and Mancini,

Thomas

The audio system works with a separate remote control. The organ we are currently working on will only have one switch which switches on the console, the PC and the audio system.

Are you planning to use a power sequencer?

Dear Ed,

our newly developed function switching on is easy: The MIDI console receives electricity from the PC, hence when switching on the PC the MIDI console is activated too. We build a relay into the amplifier which is operated through the PC as well, so it is also switched on simultaneously.
This can be explained in a much more complicated and detailed way of course, but I am less interested in technical details. This is what my technician colleagues are here for, for whom this is piece of cake, while I have no clue. That's the fair way of distributing tasks, everybody does what they are good at.... We tested the system and it works fine.

dalest wrote:hello, could you say us more abnout your : newly designed display for the sequencer and swell pedal?

Dear Eric
it's a 2,8" TFT LCD Display modul (320x240 ). The upper part shows the condition of the sequencer, the lower part (swell pedal) is connected to the swell pedal's potentiometer, and shows the current state thereof.

Best Wishes
Laszlo
