For sale - 4-manual Magnus

PostThu Mar 19, 2015 5:24 am

The 4-manual, 80-stop Magnus/Hauptwerk organ currently in use at Rochester Cathedral will be available for sale later this year (probably Autumn). Pictures can be seen here:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/qvqhh9876peu ... a7Lra?dl=0

We will be asking £29,950 which will include a Hauptwerk Public Installation Licence, the Hereford Cathedral sample-set (alternatives/additions also possible) and six large Magnus OmniSound speaker cabinets.

Transport from Rochester to its next home will be at buyer's expense.
We suggest asking your local organ builder, as they will obviously be experienced in moving things like this.
It is solid oak, and weighs almost half a ton, though it does have wheels.

I'll be glad to answer any questions by e-mail or phone (see contact details below).

Douglas.

If you don't mind me asking, what will the Cathedral install in its place? Are they moving up to a pipe organ?

The Hauptwerk installation was always intended to be temporary.
The cathedral already has a fine 4-manual pipe organ (last rebuilt by Manders in 1989).
It was just taken out of use for a few months during building works in the crypt, to avoid dust getting sucked into the blowing mechanism. Hopefully it should be back in use by late summer/early autumn.

That is great to hear!

That Magnus console is certainly breathtaking. Whoever can afford it will most certainly get many years of enjoyment. :)

Overall, a nice looking console. It seems as though some of the stops are too close to the key cheeks and are not as easily accessible as most of the stops appear to be. This may be because of how the stop blocks are angled toward the keyboards.

I've never used lighted drawknobs. It appears one pulls them for both on and off. Is this normal?

Thanks,
Eric

It's not uncommon in the digital organ world, particularly in mainland Europe.

I suppose one gets use to it. I had assumed lighted versions were always centered, pull for on, push for off. Of course touch screens are different again.

Very nice, well featured console!
Perhaps a little pricey for LED stop knobs though?

Other than that, seems to be a very lovely console indeed.
