pedalboard shoes need midi connection?

Will my two pedalboard shoes need their own midi connection on the interface? And what about the toe pistons -- will they connect through the pedalboard's midi?

That's how I do it.

I don't know for sure, since I build all my own MIDI interfaces, but probably most MIDI encoders intended for pedalboards will handle pistons and expression as well as notes.
