Integrate with Cakewalk SONAR

PostWed Dec 21, 2016 6:14 am

Does this product work with Cakewalk SONAR or the Roland Integra 7 or is it entirely standalone?

Are there software sound banks for it?

Welcome to the forum, and thanks for the interest in Hauptwerk.

I replied to your email regarding SONAR support, which I've copied here for reference:

The AU/VST hosts that we officially support and test with are listed here:

https://www.hauptwerk.com/clientuploads/documentation/PDF/HauptwerkPrerequisites.pdf

We don't officially support recent versions of Sonar, or have first-hand experience with them, but I know of no reason that Hauptwerk's AU/VST Link wouldn't work in them.

Hauptwerk runs as a stand-alone application, optionally using its 'Hauptwerk AU/VST Link' plug-in to route MIDI from, and audio to, an AU/VST host application. I'd recommend starting by having a read through the 'MIDI sequencing, the Hauptwerk AU/VST Link and applying real-time reverb' section in the Hauptwerk user guide (on the Help menu in Hauptwerk, or on-line here: https://www.hauptwerk.com/support/documentation/ ) -- pages 181-199 in the current v4.2.1 version.

The 'Composing pieces off-line from a MIDI sequencer configured conventionally (Hauptwerk as a ‘slave’ MIDI device)' sub-section (pages 189-194) has step-by-step instructions for how to use Hauptwerk in conventional MIDI sequencer environments, such most DAW/sequencer users would probably want to use.

Note also that it's very important that you only have a single instance of the Hauptwerk plug-in loaded within your host's project, since it wouldn't normally make sense to have multiple independent pipe organs within a single project, and Hauptwerk doesn't allow multiple simultaneous plug-in instances. (The user guide covers that in more detail.)
Best regards, Martin.

Hauptwerk can also produce MIDI output from its virtual keyboards, and/or virtual divisions, and/or virtual ranks, to drive external hardware (or software) sound modules, such as Roland's Integra 7.

The most common way to use Hauptwerk with an external hardware (or software) sound module/expander, such as Roland's Integra 7, would be to have MIDI input going directly into Hauptwerk (not via a DAW/sequencer), and then configure MIDI output Hauptwerk's virtual keyboards ('Organ settings | Keyboards | Primary output' screen tab), or virtual divisions, or virtual ranks (via one of the 'Organ settings | Advanced MIDI applications | Direct MIDI ... output ...' screens).

Some organs (sample sets) have virtual MIDI couplers specifically for that purpose:

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=15633&p=117041#p117037

For those that don't, an option is to set one or more virtual ranks not to have the audio samples loaded into memory (via the 'Organ | Load organ, adjusting rank audio/memory options/routing' screen), and then to configure MIDI output from them instead (via the 'Organ settings | Advanced MIDI applications | Direct MIDI input/output for ranks/pipes | Output' screen tab). In that way, Hauptwerk would play the external sound module only when the relevant virtual stop was turned on, enabling you to to switch it on and off conveniently whilst playing, and to store its on/off state in combinations (stored registrations).

Please note also that Hauptwerk doesn't currently (v4.2.1) have support for storing/recalling/sending/changing external voice expanders' patches (MIDI bank/program numbers), although we do have that logged as a potential enhancement request for the longer-term future.

If you haven't done so already, my recommendation would to download Hauptwerk and experiment with it, to see whether it fits in with how you'd like to use it. It can evaluated in full:

Please also be sure to review our online tutorials which cover using various sequencers with Hauptwerk. You can find that page here under the Support section:

Good morning,

Are the sequencing tutorials still available? I can't seem to find them on Hautpwerk's website.

Kind regards

Hello Pharny,

No -- those tutorials related to obsolete versions of sequencers/DAWs/Hauptwerk, and covered bi-directional control of Hauptwerk which, in practice, we found that relatively few sequencer/DAW users wanted to do anyway. (Also, for simply applying reverb for Hauptwerk v5+ there's no longer a need to use VST/AU at all.)

For current/recent versions of the Hauptwerk the 'MIDI sequencing, the Hauptwerk AU/VST Link and applying external real-time effects plug-ins' section in the main Hauptwerk user guide (pages 236-259 in the current v6.0.2 version) covers it instead.

In particular, the 'Composing pieces off-line from a MIDI sequencer configured conventionally (Hauptwerk as a ‘slave’ MIDI device)' sub-section (pages 241-247) covers the method we would normally recommend if using a a sequencer/DAW for composing, and which would certainly be the method to use if you also wanted to use other virtual instruments in your sequencer/DAW in addition to Hauptwerk.

Alternatively, if you want to use the sequencer/DAW exclusively for Hauptwerk, and/or if you have a MIDI organ console that integrates with Hauptwerk, you could instead use the method described in the 'Recording, playing back and editing live solo performances with a MIDI sequencer dedicated exclusively to Hauptwerk (Bi-directional control of the sequencer from Hauptwerk)' sub-section (pages 253-259). (That section covers the information that was previously in those tutorials.)
Best regards, Martin.
