minidsp 2x4HD

PostSun May 07, 2017 1:03 pm

I wonder if anyone is using the minidsp 2x4 HD units for HW?

https://www.minidsp.com/products/minidsp-in-a-box/minidsp-2x4-hd

I have been playing around with the (cheaper) 2x4 version for a while, with a view to controlling room resonances without a full blown DRC setup, and with some success.

Looking at the more sophisticated 2x4HD version ($205 at the moment), I have just realised that it comes with the ability to take it's input from USB via ASIO (24bit at up to 192kHz).

There seems to be considerable scope for using one of these units to deal with all of the subwoofer end of things, and without using up 2 channels of o/p from one's main interface. Each of the two inputs has a separate 10 band parametric eq, followed by a matrix switcher into 4 output channels each of which has fully controllable independent crossovers and another 10 bands of parametric equalisation.

The interface to program these is a bit of an acquired taste, but manageable.

Note that I haven't got one of these yet, though I might well do so and see what it's actually capable of.

Looks great, Nick. I'm a fan of XMOS and am pleased to see their chip in this product. I often end up running Reaper for no reason except to provide filtering for my pedal group. This would be the perfect solution.

I also have a Crown model that was just prior to a model that added DSP filtering to the input. With the minidsp 2x4HD I would get better use from that amp.

Looks as if some versions use a calibration mic.

I have no experience with the 2x4, but I use this one to correct my front channels including the subwoofer:

It works fine, but you need a calibration mic and separate software (Acourate DRC, evtl. Room EQ Wizard) to build the filters. But then you have more possibilities to correct the frequency response (more than 6 000 taps, resulting in an accuracy of 3 Hz).
Best regards
Thomas
