tablets via USB-midi instead of wifi?

PostSun Jul 16, 2017 9:00 pm

Several of us (Vangelis, gjschipper, G3) use ipad or android tablets as HW touchscreens. These tablets run the apps Lemur or TouchOSC. They talk to the HW PC over wifi. Instead, I'd like to use Android's USB-MIDI feature: the tablet just plugs into the PC with a USB cable, and looks like a standard MIDI device to the PC and to HW. Less hardware, less to configure, less brittle, less vulnerable, less latency.
Technical example: https://stackoverflow.com/a/32092713/2097284

The TouchOSC app talks only to an IP address; its menus can't specify "just be a MIDI controller." If I try anyways, HW doesn't see the tablet. No surprise.
Can Lemur imitate a MIDI controller like this? (I haven't splurged on it yet, to try it myself.)
Or must I convince one of these two app developers to support this, or (gasp) write an app myself?

Lemur iOS can connect to your Mac with the USB sync cable that is included with your iOS device. This enables MIDI communication via the Daemon, and editing/loading templates via the Editor.
See: https://liine.net/wiki/lemur/connection ... sync_cable

Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) supports USB MIDI, and so does Lemur (versions 5.3.3 and up).
To enable USB MIDI, plug your Android tablet to your computer or MIDI device with a USB cable.

However, my preference, in combination with windows, lies with a wifi connection. That is the simplest and stable connection so far.

Hello, I´m using the "USB mobile Monitor" apk to connect with USB my android Acer tablet to the PC in W7 64b. It´s easy to install, fast, free and safer than wifi. Just need a larger and good USB cable.

Fast response?

My tablet is an old 10" ACER A500. You can watch it in the Contrebombarde page, in my "biogon" profile.
Android 4.0.3

How much RAM?

1GB RAM, 32GB ROM

Fast response?

It´s very fast.

The free version displays a message starting the automatic connection to the PC.
You have to turn ON the USB debuging in the tablet.
I had to buy an active extension USB cable for more than 3 m.
It´s one of the applications that is worth buying.
