Multiple Computereboot Interfaces

PostTue Oct 17, 2017 2:49 pm

Can the HW versions use different Interfaces? Just purchased a MOTU 24Ao to ultimately replace my Firewire Saffire. Can I still use the Saffire hardware while also transitioning to the MOTU USB Unit?
Thanks,
Doug

Yes. I keep Alt0 for the Ultralite for headphones, but use Alt3 for the 24i/o for speakers.

You're welcome!

P.s. I recommend doing it my way, as the 24a/o has no hp socket. Keep Alt0 for the Saphire for headphones. Saves re-loading, etc. Use Alt /other for the a/o. Gives you a fresh start to play with for the new toy. (Assuming you have enough HDD space..........)

Hello Doug,

Just to add to others' replies, in general you can only directly use one audio interface/driver at once in Hauptwerk (or Cubase, etc.), since their hardware and software needs to need to be absolutely synchronised. However, if your Saffire has ADAT and Word Clock inputs then you could feed the ADAT and Word Clock outputs from your MOTU to the corresponding inputs on the Saffire, and avoid connecting the Saffire to the computer directly. The Saffire would then simply be functioning as a DAC (digital-to-analogue converter), providing its channels via the MOTU ADAT channels from the computer/Hauptwerk.
Best regards, Martin.

Thanks All.
Martin,
I'll probably spring for an optical D to A and retire the Saffire altogether.

Hello Doug,

An alternative could be to get another MOTU AVB device (e.g. a MOTU Ultralite AVB) if you want more channels than the 24ao provides, and/or if you want a headphones output. You could then just connect the new/second device to the first via a single AVB cable (Cat6 or Cat5e Ethernet cable), and not connect the new/second device directly to the computer. The channels of the second device could then be configured in MOTU's software to appear as additional channels via the first device (similar to using ADAT).
Best regards, Martin.
