Headphone Amplifier Sound Distorted

PostMon Oct 23, 2017 10:53 am

Mac Pro (2013) and MacBook (Early 2016), both running macOS 10.13 (17A405)
Reaper 5.52 OS X 64-bit
Hauptwerk 4.21
Headphone Amplifier FiiO E10K Olympus 2, connected via USB.

I already posted this question in the Reaper forum (where it probably belongs), but I did not get an answer. Let's give it a try here. Maybe someone has a smart idea...

I am using Reaper along with the Hauptwerk Virtual Organ software. Things aren't what they used to be. The following problem is new and now present on both systems.

Reaper audio sent to the headphone amplifier connected via USB is distorted. Hauptwerk audio, directly sent to the headphone amplifier sounds perfect.

The problem is a little bit hard to describe. It sounds like tok-tok-tok-tok. In between the toks audio seems to be normal. The frequency of the toks is greater than one per second. When I route Reaper audio to the built-in headphone connector, everything is okay.

Any ideas, what could be wrong? Thanks in advance!

Best regards,
Chris

Hello Chris,

You've probably already thought of this, but making sure that the level isn't set too high could be a first check. Apart from that, my guess would be that it's a performance/compatibility issue with the driver within Reaper, perhaps affected by a Reaper driver buffer size setting (buffer size, number of buffers, etc.).

Reaper has tons of preferences. I tried them all out (however, not in every possible combination). I finally gave up.

However, I solved the problem unexpectedly. While reading the HW manual, I found that Apple Garageband can work as AU host. Obviously, I had overseen this option for a long time. I tried it out ... and finally, I got it working.

Martin, thanks for your hints!

Apologies in advance for my sense of humour, bit I found that amusing. :)

Richard
