best midi keybaords????

Postby adri » Thu Mar 22, 2018 6:21 pm

I have a 4-manual console that used to be a Rodgers analogue electronic organ. It was midi-fied.

It functions quite well, but I don't like the feel of these keys. Not much better than the M-Audio 4-manual stack I used to have.

I need to have more resistance. These all play too light and have no "tracker" feel and the keys a probably too short and should be made of wood, and also a more ivory/bone covering and feel. Mine are too slippery.

What can anyone recommend? And by whom? Willing to pay whatever they cost.
Ideally should have midi-buttons as well.

I'll consider these as well when I become a millionaire. By then, I'll probably be too old to appreciate such opulence. Always wary when no prices are listed.

If you want a nice touch, be prepared to pay:

They are literally the best keyboards I've played on (other than real tracker/mechanical keyboards), and worth every penny. Sometimes it's worth it to spend a little.

Can you do anything to improve the touch of your existing keyboards? For instance one way to simulate tracker touch if your keys pivot much further than immediately behind the thumbrail of the manual above is to fit a small magnet to each key and suspend a rigid iron bar the width of the keybed over the keys where the magnets are fitted (you might want a thin layer of felt inbetween to avoid any contact). Neodynium magnets are tiny but very powerful and can be glued to roughened wood or plastic with epoxy but for additional strength you can get ring countersunk magnets which have a hole in them allowing them to be screwed in with a countersunk screw. If you would otherwise be junking the keyboards it might be worth a shot with a few octaves in one keyboard initially as it would be fiddly but cheap and should at least give you an idea whether it's worth persisting. Depending on key length and pivot point it might be possible to place the magnets somewhere else along the key or even underneath on the other side of the pivot if access is difficult.
