What do I need to replace?

PostWed Feb 19, 2020 9:27 pm

I have an Allen Mds-1 using Hauptwerk with an HP laptop with an i7 processor and 16GB RAM. They're connected through a very cheap USB to MIDI cable. It works ok except for occasionally crackling that only occurs when using Hauptwerk - the speakers work fine playing other audio from the computer. Other than that I'm very happy with it. I'm pretty literate when it comes to computer hardware, but not at all about audio equipment. I'd like to solve my crackling problem in the simplest and cheapest way possible. Greatly appreciate any assistance.

Lots of things to check....

Latency, buffering, PC issues (several Window's processes, such as SuperFetch have been known to be extremely pesky...)

Does your CPU meter (inside Hauptwerk) spike up into the RED when the glitch happens?

As well as the comments in the reply above - do NOT connect your PC to the internet. Background activities caused by processing internet usage can sometimes produce problems such a crackling.

Hello nichole,

I'd suggest also have a read through the 'Performance tuning' section in the main Hauptwerk user guide (pages 237-253 in the current v5.0.0 version). E.g. first make sure you have an ASIO driver selected.
Best regards, Martin.

Thanks. I got the ASIO driver and it decreased the crackling by a lot but didn't completely eliminate it. It introduced a slight latency that wasn't there before, but that's more tolerable than the crackling.

Windows comes tuned to work badly for real-time audio. The first thing to do is go through the 3 page list of Windows tuning points around page 250 of the HW user guide, as Martin suggested. I have to fix 5 to 10 of those issues with each new Windows machine or OS upgrade.
