Windows 10 Update 2004 and EMU 1616

PostMon Sep 21, 2020 1:49 pm

Hi all!

It seems that E-MU 1616 are no longer working in Windows 10 2004. The error is: "PatchMix DSP Error! You don't appear to have sufficient E-MU hardware to load the session in your system.".

Some time ago when updating to Windows 10 1903 I received the same message. :( But after some research I found how to fix the problem. At

https://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=529349

there is the topic "E-MU 1616m, 1212m, 1820m, 0404 Audio Interface - Complete Windows 10 (1903 & Above) Installation Guide" including a link intended for download the installer file. After installing following the clear guidelines all works fine. :)

Now after updating to Windows 10 2004 I get the same error :(( My new research is unfruitful... :_(

Can someone help?

Hello Carles,

Often Windows will replace some drivers during upgrade.

Try to re-apply the solution you found to fix the problem after Windows upgraded to 1903. It may work and fix your problem.

Then type in Windows search box "Control" and select Control Panel | System and Security | System. In the left pane select Advanced settings . Click Hardware tab then "Device installation settings" and tick NO.

Windows will stop replacing your drivers

Anybody tamed the Win 10/2004 update and the E-mu ? I have the 1212m and just installing a new PC and don't want to spend Christmas troubleshooting the card if this is again not working on the 2004.

I followed the post 1 in the KVR thread but once I ran the script I believe I got an error message that the targets were not found. I will try again, or there is a different way described in the thread[url] here:

Would a simple MIDI to USB cable be enough ?

Hello positive,

If you only need a single MIDI IN port and a single MIDI OUT port, then I'd expect that to work. I don't think we've had any feedback on that particular model, so how reliable and well-buffered it is I don't knoww, but given that it's a respectable brand it's probably fine. The Roland UM-One Mk2 is a similar model: https://www.roland.com/us/products/um-one_mk2/ .

Is the number of channels important for Hauptwerk ?
The ESI device has 32, Mio (somebody local offered it to me) has only 16

Hello positive,

16 MIDI channels are ample for the vast majority of Hauptwerk users.

Any given 5-pin DIN MIDI port can carry at most 16 MIDI channels. Based on a quick look at ESI's website, their MIDIMATE eX only has two 5-pin DIN MIDI ports, but you can optionally configure it to use both as computer MIDI IN ports (thus giving a total of 32 MIDI IN channels). However, if you did that you would then have no MIDI OUT ports. MIDI OUT ports are needed if, and only if, you have any MIDI devices for Hauptwerk to control, such as solenoid-operated/illuminated draw-knobs/tabs, illuminated pistons, or LCD panels.

In Hauptwerk v6+ if you can change MIDI interfaces you don't need to auto-detect your MIDI settings again, so there would be little to lose by trying the ESI MIDI interface (or indeed any other reputable brand's, such as Roalnd's or iConnectivity's) if you wanted to.
Best regards, Martin.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. At the end (after fighting Dell Precision 5810 to boot from a NVME drive until 4am, at least a full success), I have decided to save my sanity and to let the venerable E-mu 1212m go (instead of tinkering with the Win10 drivers and my precious OS system) and ordered the GIGAPORT eX audio interface (from England in 2 days!) and will get locally the Mio cable.

So my new system will be MIDI from the console via the cable into USB on the PC, processed in HW, and going into USB connected GIGAPORT audio interface with 3 pairs of channels and sub via RCA connectors to a receiver with multichannel (DVD) RCA inputs.
This is possibly the most affordable way to get a multichannel enjoyment of HW :D
