Willing to try a RME BabyFace Pro FS on my Mac

PostTue Jun 20, 2023 5:46 am

Hi to all 8)

I'd like to make an attempt to install a REM BabyFace Pro FS on my Mac, to check the difference between my current DAC an a high end sound card.

Yet I'm a bit afraid it would be complicated - sorry, I'm not very techy.

The question is simple then - what should I do to make it work?

Is it sufficient to hook it to the Mini, install the drivers and RME TotalMix FX, and declaring it as the sound output in Hauptwerk? Or is there any setting to do either on the BabyFace and/or to TotalMix? I have a strong feeling - but I might be wrong - this is not just plug'n'play.

The sound would be incoming from the Mini, and to be routed to Optical output and / or headphone output.

Thanks in advance for any tip / advice. 8)

Hello Pat,

Whilst I don't have first-hand experience with that particular audio interface, I would expect the process to be as follows:

- Exit Hauptwerk if it's running.

- Install the interface's driver.

- Connect the interface to the computer.

- Launch Hauptwerk. It should report that a new audio device has been found, and then open the "General settings | Audio device ..." screen automatically.

- On that screen, change the "Audio output device" setting to the new audio interface, then OK the screen.

- Load St. Anne's and verify that you can hear its sound through the desired pair of audio outputs on the new interface. If not, and assuming you're just using stereo audio output from Hauptwerk, open the "General settings | Audio mixer" screen, keep the "Master mix 1 ... main/recording" bus entry highlighted in the left-hand list (as it is by default), and in the right-hand pane change its "Audio output device channels: Channels" setting to be the desired pair of the interface's channels. Then verify that you can now hear the organ properly, then OK the screen.
Best regards, Martin.

Belated thanks Martin! 8)

I shall try as you suggest and will come back to you in case I face any issue.

Sorry I have not answered before as I was on a professional trip.
