9-byte SYSEX Stop Controls on Syndyne Control System

PostTue Jan 30, 2024 3:55 pm

I have been tasked with adding Hauptwerk to an existing organ which uses a Syndyne (I believe) control system.

The manuals, pedalboard, and expression pedals all output MIDI data as expected and auto-detect within Hauptwerk with no issues.

The control system will handle all of the combination action.

The problem that I have is that the stops send 9-byte SYSEX messages for on/off. When inside Hauptwerk, I see an option for doing 8-byte SYSEX but not 9-byte. Here is a screenshot of the MIDI traffic of me turning various stops on/off.

Is it possible to get this to work with Hauptwerk directly? Or will it require a MIDI translation program? Or will it require Syndyne to reprogram the control system?

No, I don't think so. You have to draw the line somewhere, maybe 9 bytes will be supported in a future Hauptwerk version. I believe some manufacturers do more than 9 bytes in their sysex messages. So just translate the messages, I'd say. You can try contacting Syndyne, it's worth a try, but I think it's unlikely they will pay you any attention. If they do pay you attention, it's going to cost a pretty penny to have it reprogrammed.

Hello Drew,

To confirm Larason2's reply (thanks very much, Larason2), indeed Hauptwerk currently supports a maximum of 8 standard sys-ex bytes for stops/switches, but we do have an enhancement request logged for potentially increasing that. I've added your notes to that request.
Best regards, Martin.
