Speaking of Reverberation

PostFri Aug 13, 2004 1:53 am

Martin touched on the topic of reverberation in another thread recently. Since I was a Hammond RT-3 owner for over 35 years I know how the addition of good reverb enhances my enjoyment of my organ playing experiences. I have used the three-spring reverb thingy on the Hammond tone cabinet, and I even built a Schober Reverbatape unit in the early '70s (I wore that unit out, too).

Now that I'm pursuing the Hauptwerk route to home organ enjoyment, I've been looking for a good digital effects processor at a cost I can easily afford. I have come across the Lexicon brand name in my web wanderings. Somehow, I think it was one of the better-known digital organ manufacturers that stated on their website that they use Lexicon FX where needed in reverb deficient rooms.

Here's a website for an inexpensive Lexicon FX proc: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MPX110/

Does anyone have any experience with Lexicon, or does anyone have an opinion from the advertisement?

I have twt MPX110 units.........

PostFri Aug 13, 2004 4:11 pm

They were installed to replace the two Allen spring reverb columns
which came with my organ some 26 years ago. This organ has
four reverb channels complete with amplifiers and speakers as
it was built back in 1978. Each of the two reverb "towers" had
two inputs and outputs, guess there are two sets of reverb springs
in each. Anyway, the MPX110 units, also with dual inputs/outputs
are vastly better for the original Allen MOS-1 four computer organ.

However, with Hauptwerk, I use them.....not too much. Why?

Some of the organ sample CD's available to HW users have the
room reverb included in the samples, others do not. Those which
do, I shut down the reverb system as the Allen is set up now to
output midi signal channels from each of the manuals and pedal
boards. Sometimes I want to add an Allen voice to the Hauptwerk
organ being played. In that case, I might add just a touch of
MPX110 reverb. Samething is also done with the Allen tremelo
units, mostly they are off. Sometimes, if I am using the
Miditzer theatre organ emulation virtual theatre organ, I will
turn on the Allen Trem 4 units, but not often.

A small number of the HW samples organs available are "dry";
no room reverb included. For those, of course, I use the
MPX110 units. You must be careful; too much reverb sounds
very un-natural!

Anyway, the MPX110 units are very satisfactory, at least in
my opinion for my use.

Best,
Jim Reid
