Favourite organs - altering the order ...

PostMon Aug 27, 2012 11:55 am

I may have overlooked something, and if I have, accept my apologies in advance, but otherwise, I have a question:

Is there a quick and efficient way of re-ordering the Favourite Organs List, for example, to make room for a new organ other than at the end of the list or using an unoccupied slot?

For example, it seems that re-ording the list can only be done by loading in turn each organ to be re-ordered and re-assigning it to a new number in the list. Can I re-order the Favourites to permit me to "slot in" a new organ to the Favourites List or must I add it to the end or into an unused number in the list?

Am I right in thinking that an organ can only be assigned a location in the Favourites List when it is loaded?

I ask this because when one gets a new organ, it seems that it is not possible to make room for it (other than overwriting one already assigned) without loading each organ in the list, re-assigning it to a different index number, and then loading the new organ in the duplicate slot left when the organs have been moved.

I suppose it depends upon how Hauptwerk works when an organ is assigned as a Favourite, but if it is simply a case of adding an organ (e.g. by ID) into some kind of list that is read by the software, it should be possible to create and amend the Favourites List without loading the organs. If the software does more than that, then I accept that it may be necessary to load the organ first. This does not matter if one does not "order" the organs by some parameter such as size, date, builder, country etc, but one's organs are "ordered" it would be excellent if the list could be managed without having to load each organ to do so!

If I have missed something in the documentation, I am sorry, but I have noted that the "Assign" button only lights up when an organ is loaded.

As a supplementary question, is there a file where the list or favourites is maintained? And if so would it be editable, given the usual caveats about risk of damage, unsupportable actions, etc.?

Many thanks

Hello Ken,

You cannot rearrange the order unless you reassign new/different organs to overwrite the current listed organs. The organ needs to be loaded in order to assign it to a favorite slot.

As a supplementary question, is there a file where the list or favourites is maintained? And if so would it be editable, given the usual caveats about risk of damage, unsupportable actions, etc.?

If you want to research doing so yourself you can at your own risk, however that is not a supported process and we strongly urge users not to modify any internal Hauptwerk files at the risk of breaking your installation.

Thanks, Brett ...

I don't know whether you might consider looking at this question when developing the next version of Hauptwerk, because as you'll appreciate, some of the larger organs do take time to load, which makes the process of organising the Favourites take longer than it need do.

As you could guess, I fully expected the kind of form of words used in reply to my supplementary question. But I may well see whether this is possible - taking all responsibility of course!

Regards & thanks

Ken.

Hello Ken,

We'll discuss it here and have a look to see what might be an option to facilitate arranging favorite organ listings.

Thanks, Brett ... I am sure I am not alone in considering that such a change would be most helpful.

I have actually located the configuration file in which list of the "Standby" organs (as they were called in version 3.x) and now, the "Favourite" organs (as added in version 4.x), is held and can see how it may be changed manually. Of course I will approach the idea of making such changes very carefully, and only after making backups!

I also would like the option to alter the list of Favorite organs to be included, if possible, in a future Hauptwerk update.

Please could I too add my vote for a better way of re-assigning the Favourite Organs list? We should be able to assign any installed organ to the list, and re-order the list, without needing to load the organs first.

Thanks

Is it still the case, even with HW 4.1.1.012, that we cannot rearrange the favourite organs list other than by re-loading the organs, or have I missed something? (If I have missed something the search engine isn't finding it!)

I find the issue being discussed appears to be present in v4.1.1.012. Noting the issue of loading large organs, I started to leave the first slot blank to accommodate a new sample. That is until I had too many organs so as not being able to "afford" to loose that slot.

Not sure how difficult the software rewrite would be, but a few additional slots would be nice, too. And, yes, I do dream about such things, but come back to reality when I start to think of the huge amount of possibilities we already have with Hauptwerk. 8)

Hmmmm...
I thought I had read something fairly recently about this now being possible - but perhaps I was dreaming. However, as I don't own very many organs it's probably quicker to bite the bullet and re-load/re-assign them than waste time searching the forum and the manual. But you guys who own a lot of organs have my sympathy.

Hello Graham,

There have been no changes to the way that organs are assigned to the 'favorites' slots since v4.0.0, but we do still have it logged as an enhancement request for future consideration/scheduling. I think you must indeed have been dreaming!

Yeah, right. The only sympathy should be directed at the clean and empty wallet many of us have

Hauptwerk does, indeed, give us lots of "areas" to dream. :)
