Lost stops on Mt Carmel Skinner

PostTue Aug 11, 2015 5:01 pm

Hello,

I'm having a strange problem with the Mt Carmel Skinner sample set. I've been setting new routings for it from the Organ Load screen, and at some point, all the stops except the Chimes and Carillon would no longer sound. I've tried it now with separate Hauptwerk config startups and the pattern is the same. The keyboards seem assigned properly and the midi control screen shows midi input on the expected channels. I've been doing similar new routings with my other sample sets and not experienced any problems.

Any idea what might cause this?

Hartley

Do they sound when you use a mouse on the virtual (screen) keyboards? Do they show up on the stop list (along with the Chimes and Carillon)? Did you route the stops different than the Chimes and Carillon? Have you tried reloading the Organ? By different routings, do you mean audio as into different amps (speakers)? How are you controlling the stops, i.e. (real) stop tabs/drawknobs, touch screen(s), LaunchPad? Do the virtual draw knobs change indicating whether they are drawn or not?

Hello Hartley,

My guess is that you accidentally turned the virtual blower switch off at some point. It's the key graphic on the right-hand side of the Skinner's main virtual console screen tab.

Does turning that on solve it?

Engrsc, Martin,

Thanks for the quick responses.

The problem was the blower switch, as Martin suggested. I had never noticed it before, didn't know such a thing exists.

Best Regards,
Hartley.

Was the blower switch de-activated for US users when the wind model was unavailable?
If so, perhaps this was the first time you have ever had to use it?

Hello Douglas,

Yes -- the Skinner sample set's blower switch does nothing unless the wind supply model is enabled. Hence quite a few U.S.A.-based Advanced Edition users have fallen foul of that recently (when the wind supply model became available to them for the first time in Hauptwerk v4.2.1+).
Best regards, Martin.

I must confess to having been caught out by that several times in the early days.
That's the problem with Hauptwerk being so realistic!

wind model

PostThu Aug 13, 2015 10:03 am

Well, it's good to know why the problem occurred. It makes sense it began with the wind model upgrade which I did a few weeks back, but didn't connect to this. I figured I had "fat-fingered" the switch accidentally with the new touch screen I'm using on the organ to control stops.

That virtual blower switch on the Skinner sample set defaults to 'on', but it also remembers its state. Hence you must have turned it off at some point in the past, but you wouldn't have noticed any effect from doing so until you had the wind supply model enabled. Sometimes people have the same issue with it when upgrading from the Basic to the Advanced Edition too.

Martin, Does this refer to the old wet set, the new dry one, or both?
Mine was always off until I switched it on.

We updated the wet version organ file to default the switch to on with Update Patch v. 1.02 on March 14, 2010. The dry version has always defaulted to on from what I remember.

While it may hold true to "authenticism ", it can be a "gotcha" at the same time, Does anyone really shut down a virtual organ sample set via a blower switch? Just curious. I had forgotten about that but not the Milan Digital and Hauptwerk stops. :o

Re: Lost stops on Mt Carmel Skinner

I have the 1928 E.M. Skinner (wet) and I'm trying to figure out the Wind System. I read that at one time it was not available to the USA. Then with 4.2 it became available to the USA. (I have 4.2.1.) My Skinner always come up with the key in the OFF position. What I would like to happen is for it to come up in the ON position, or simply have no effect. I have tried not loading the Blower "stop" and then also the "Trem Noise", but the key still comes up in the OFF position. I've searched the Skinner document, as well as the Hauptwerk 4.2.1 document, but I can't find any way to disable the Wind System. Is there a secret to doing this that I have not discovered? I don't mind the realism of the blower noise or trem noise but I don't want to have to go to the console display to turn on the key. Thanks for help.
