Moving Hauptwerk folders after adding an external drive

PostSun Feb 19, 2017 9:53 am

My new Hauptwerk computer (Windows 7) has two 512 GB SSDs, where my previous computer had one 1TB HDD. I didn't account for the free space no longer being combined, plus some added Dell and Windows bloatware, so I can't fit all my samplesets on this two drive configuration.

Currently, HauptwerkInternalWorkingFiles is in C:\Hauptwerk and HauptwerkSampleSetsAndComponents is in D:\Hauptwerk.

If the new, larger but slower external drive is E: and I want to move the sample sets and components to it, and move the internal working files to D:, are these the right steps?

0. Make a Hauptwerk backup of settings.
1. Move D:\Hauptwerk\HauptwerkSampleSetsAndComponents to E:\Hauptwerk\...
2. Move C:\Hauptwerk\HauptwerkInternalWorkingFiles to D:\Hauptwerk\...
3. Run installer and give it the two new top-level directories ...\Hauptwerk under Custom.

Should I expect this to recache samplesets afterward?

I know this topic has been covered in other posts, but I'd like to verify the steps before I shoot myself in the foot.

Thank you.

You should use the HW installation program to do the job. If you do so, all required path names are updated automatically.

That's the plan. Moving the folders first to avoid disk full on D: in case the installer happens to move them in an unfortunate order.
Thanks.

Yes -- I think your described steps should work.

I can't remember off-hand whether the installer will clear all caches if moving HauptwerkInternalWorkingFiles, so if you don't want that then you could probably move that folder somewhere temporary, run the installer and tell it the new intended locations (so that it creates an empty HauptwerkInternalWorkingFiles folder in the destination location), then move the contents of your old HauptwerkInternalWorkingFiles folder from its temporary location into the new HauptwerkInternalWorkingFiles folder.

I just finished the disk migrations. I followed Martin's modification to the original plan, and the only organ that recached was the expected reinstalled St. Anne's. All very smooth, and now my cache disk has plenty of free space. Thanks!
