Sostenuto for Theatre Organ?

Postby B777Captain » Thu Nov 23, 2017 6:57 pm

All..

Has anyone installed a sostenuto switch on their swell shoe for theater organ style playing? I'm wanting to do this but not sure if it's possible. I thought I recalled some here who had installed it but.... with my old brain, I could well be mistaken.

Also a second touch on the lower accomp manual for the theater organ as well.

Life is challenging having a 2 GB memory in a 10 GB world! :-)

Thanks

Hello Pat,

[Topic moved here.]

Hauptwerk itself doesn't have a generic 'master sostenuto' function generically (although we do have that logged as an enhancement request), but some theatre organ sample sets do include sostenuto functions (including the MasterWorks 3/31 and Paramount series, for example).

Provided that the sample set has such a function, you should just need to use right-click auto-detection to map your MIDI switch/pedal to it.

Most (or probably all) of the theatre organ sample sets support second-touch on their Accompaniment divisions. For such divisions, Hauptwerk allows the second-touch to be triggered by any of the following means (in descending order of preference):

1. MIDI keys with real second-touch contacts (which transmit on a different MIDI channel, or MIDI port, from the main contacts).
2. MIDI key after-touch exceeding a specified threshold.
3. MIDI key velocity exceeding a specified threshold.
4. MIDI channel after-touch exceeding a specified threshold.
Best regards,
Martin.

Pat,

I could not tell if you were asking about how to add these features in software to a sample set or how to realize them physically on your console. Martin has answered the first question.

I have both sostenuto (on a switch attached to a swell shoe) and second touch on my home theater organ console. If you want to see how I did this, go to

http://www.nightbloomingjazzmen.com/Theater_Organ_Project.html

Of course, there are lots of ways to do this, but perhaps this will give you some ideas.

A possible hardware solution - Doepfer - CTM64 Contact To MIDI Interface

http://www.doepfer.de/ctm.htm The right hand column is the English translation.

This encoder can be used with a keyboard that is configured for a single contact per key. The 1/4“ jack socket can be used to insert a sustain pedal (contact type ”closed at rest” is required) generating the MIDI sustain message (controller #64).

I am looking for the simple sostenuto switch... to attach to my swell shoe. My consultant tells me we have everything else in the organ setup.

Would anyone know where specifically I can get a sostenuto switch to attach to the swell shoe?

Thanks.

There is one from Arndt Organ Supply. Here is the link to their PDF catalog and on page 7, a kick-switch that can attach to swell shoe.

Thank you Danny and Ed!

I think the Arndt model will be more in line with what I'm looking for but I do like the Hammond ones too!
