Migrating files

PostSun Dec 01, 2019 4:26 pm

As someone who has not migrated to a new computer since becoming a Hauptwerkian- what is the procedure to get the unencrypted sample sets to the new hardware. I have a new iMac Pro on its way; the release of HWV seemed like the right time to do this.

If you are migrating to a new MAC you perhaps should look at http://forum.hauptwerk.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=17850 which discusses HW 5.0 on the new macOS.

I think I would reinstall sample sets rather than trying to copy the files.

Hello David,

[Topic moved here.]

To confirm Iain's reply (thanks, Iain), yes -- that post describes the recommended process.
Best regards, Martin.

Thanks! So, to be specific, should I copy the .rar files to the new computer?

You should copy the sample set files (these are files those name ends with .CompPkg.Hauptwerk.rar and .CompPkg.Hauptwerk.r00 (with numeric endings 00, 01, 02 etc.)) to the new machine and then install them into HW using the File | Install function. Where there a multiple files for a data package (i.e. there are ".rar" and ".r00" .. files install the .rar file and the others will be picked up as part of the same multi-part rar data set.

Hello David,

On the new computer, you would need to use 'File | install ...' in Hauptwerk v5 to install of your sample sets. For that, yes -- you would need the sample set installation (RAR) files, as supplied by the makers of the sample sets (at their v5 versions, if they're protected sample sets).

(Edit: P.S. Thanks, Iain -- I see we both replied at the same time.)
Best regards, Martin.

Another question in regard to migrating to a new computer: I’m copying my latest HW backup settings from the old computer to a flash drive. Where should I put them on the new computer? Or will HW 5 automatically find them without my transferring them?

Thanks,
David

If I remember correctly, the restore from backup function lets you browse for the file, so you czn put it anywhere.

Hello david,

Yes -- just use the 'File | Restore ...' function in Hauptwerk to restore any backup (that you had made via 'File | Backup ...'). You will be prompted to browse for the backup file.

The 'Moving your settings to a new/different computer or restoring them to your existing computer' section in the main Hauptwerk user guide (pages 30-31 in the current v5.0.0 version) covers how to transfer an installation to a new computer.
Best regards, Martin.
