Order of Upgrades: HW5 or Catalina?

PostSun Dec 08, 2019 5:13 pm

On a MAC running Mojave, which is best to upgrade first:

Hauptwerk to V5 under Mojave and then later Mojave to Catalina,
or
the other way around: First upgrade to Catalina and assure the HW V4 still works, then upgrade HW to V5?

(The Mojave upgrade is currently being delayed because MOTU drivers for the 828 MK3 are delayed.)

Since Catalina requires a different directory layout, and an upgrade install of HWV will use the same layout as the existing HW4, the recommendation is to uninstall HW4 (after backing up all settings, of course) and do a fresh install of HWV into which the backed-up settings can be restored. Doing this before updating to Catalina would minimise the fiddling around required.

Hello WmHurt,

To add to Paul's post (thanks, Paul), this post covers it in detail:

If the HW4 installation has the user data already on a separate disk (InternalWorkingFiles, SampleSetsAndComponents, and UserData) how much of this can be carried over for use in HW5, at least for those sample sets for which the vendor claims no re-download is needed?

The migration explanations I found so far are excellent, but these seem to deal mainly with the default user data locations.

Does the HW4 uninstall delete all these?

As long as none of your main Hauptwerk data folders (HauptwerkSampleSetsAndComponents, HauptwerkUserData, or HauptwerkInternalWorkingFiles) are on the operating system's primary drive then I don't think macOS 10.15 will object, so there should be no specific need to un-install v4 first before upgrading to v5 and/or macOS 10.15. However, do of course make sure you use 'File | Backup ...' in Hauptwerk first and keep the result somewhere safe, before doing any upgrades, for good measure.

For best results, my own inclination in general would still be to re-format the system drive and install macOS 10.15 'from clean' anyway, rather than letting the 10.15 installer attempt to upgrade an existing pre-10.15 macOS installation (but you can probably get away with letting the 10.15 installer upgrade the system). If you do decide to do a clean 10.15 installation, and if you want to retain and migrate your existing Hauptwerk data files (which are on your separate disk), then when installing Hauptwerk v5 you would need to select the 'Custom' option in the v5 installer, and when prompted for each installation location, select the *parent* directory of your HauptwerkSampleSetsAndComponents, HauptwerkUserData, and HauptwerkInternalWorkingFiles directories respectively. The installer should then install into their existing folders, so that they will be used for your v5 installation (with their contents automatically migrated when you first launch Hauptwerk v5).
Best regards, Martin.
