WIN XP Starting Time

PostThu May 22, 2003 6:04 pm

Does anybody have any idea why my WIN XP system alternately takes less than one minute and then more than three minutes to start? This is just to start Windows, exclusive of the Hauptwerk and organ loading cycle. The system is dedicated to the organ application and is not loading any other software (that I'm aware of). Any suggestions as to how to always make it start quickly would be appreciated.

PC Start

Hi. Apart from loading the application programm the PC during booting is busy handling other processes. You might want to check the BIOS first (press F1 or Del during boot)

- deactivate Quick Power On Self Test

- check boot sequence (harddisk first then CD-ROM)
- deactivate drive search
(save BIOs before exit)

There is a tool available from MS for optimization of booting:
Download BootVis (Visualizer) at
http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/platform ... efault.asp
This also allows tracing the components of booting. I havn`t tried it myself but it is a recommended practice.
Last point: The autostart section. Open msconfig.exe and search for unwanted culprits there (virus scanners etc.).
Let me know if this doesn`t work. There are more hints.

Sorry, just checked the MS link. If it doesn`t exist in this form, use the search function for BootVis. At any rate this is a real powerful tool.

Hi. I found the link: www.microsoft.com/downloads/
Search for BootVis. There are more articles and a white paper explaining the usage of the file (325kByte).

Test Results

PostFri May 30, 2003 3:19 pm

Hi, Calcant - Thanks for the information! I've just gotten around to loading and using BootVis and found that my starts varied from about 25 sec to about 170 sec, more or less alternately. Both Prefetching and Driver initialization were taking up the bulk of the excess time. I've disabled prefetching in the registry and am now consistently starting in about 30 seconds, which, together with the organ loading, results in a total startup time of a little more than 2 minutes, which is quite acceptable.
Thanks again for your help!
