Pre-taste of things to come (?)

PostSun Aug 26, 2012 11:03 pm

Even though Voxus has not not yet released Tholen, the later promised Tiel organ caught my attention on YouTube, so I'm posting, way ahead of the game, "a few" sound samples, without any comments about the music, the playing style, etc.
This is purely for you to get an audible "glimpse" of this rather interesting organ!

Hello Adri,

Very interesting indeed! Maybe I'm just hearing things so correct me if you feel I'm wrong, but this instrument immediately hit me as sounding very similar to the Cliquot at Versailles.

????

I personally don't think so; such very different organs altogether!

Hi Adri,

I will agree, totally different instruments from different times and places, however I hear some distinct similarities in the flutes in particular and some of the higher pitched reed stops that seemed to immediately jump out at me.

I have this particular Michel Chapuis CD, a person would have to listen to the entire album for comparison to hear what I am, but here's some examples http://www.amazon.com/LOrgue-De-Chapell ... B000QQYAY0 I have a few other Chapuis CD's on the same Cliquot organ that probably demonstrate better, I'd just have to find the tracks. Maybe I'll do a bit more digging. In any case, I really like the sound of the Tiel organ.

Here's perhaps a much better example. Pay attention to the higher pitched stops and in particular, the flutes in the first cut. The second cut starting @ 1:07 is where it gets interesting for the higher pitched stops. This cut has a very similar sound to the first example of the Tiel. Then listen to the beginning of the third cut @ 2:47, hard to deny much of any difference again in the sound of the flutes of the Cliquot compared to the flutes in the third example of the Tiel given here. Of all the organs I have heard, the flutes of these two instruments are superb, among the best sounding out there in my opinion.

Again I'm not saying the two instruments are even the same, but for two organs of different times and places, there are some pretty remarkable similarities in sound. Enjoy the show!

How can you compare anything with the "youtube" poor sound quality ?

The point of comparing kind of eludes me, because only Tiel is being sampled and will accommodate a totally different literature than the palace organ. It is not unusual for especially flutes of one organ to sound like flutes of other organs.

The point of my post was to simply point out some *similarities* I can hear between the two instruments, nothing more, nothing less, so no need to feel there's a comparison or something eludes you, and the YouTube audio was just fine, I can hear it without problem. I was just looking to see if anyone else might also say "yea, in certain circumstances they do sound kind of the same," and not start an argument. If you don't think they sound at all the same whatever the registration, fine, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

I get the impression from some, if the instrument isn't built by the same builder in the same century out of the same tin, wood and on exact time of day, then all of a sudden there is zero chance two different organs can even remotely sound at all like each other and it's totally against the rules to suggest so. I don't get that worked up about things. So don't worry, it's o.k., admitting two instruments sound similar to each other won't result in the organ purist police coming looking for you.

We could take the average circus or merry-go-round organ, give it a decent registration, and Bach would probably say it works just fine for most literature. :)
