Work progressing on new sample set

PostThu Mar 11, 2004 6:52 pm

Hello, fellow virtualists

I am finally started working on sampling a 1966 Schantz organ

I'll post links to demo files as the work progresses, as well as links to the stoplist. The instrument in question is a 2m 32 rank organ.

I'll be providing the origianl spec for $75, an expanded
3m version for $100. The 3M version will include some modified stops and a few ranks from some of the other organs I've sampled. the aim with the 3m will be to provide a workable 3m romantic spec for those who have memory concerns.

My samples are a bit shorter than some of the other sample producers, and I'm hoping to keep the memory requirements lower without sacrificing quality.

As this project progresses, I must agree that we don't pay our sample producers enough - folks, this is TEDIOUS work if you want to get it right.
Having said that, I want to make this set available at a lower cost to help out those who really want it but cannot afford it.

Once Martin publicly releases version 2, there will be limited support for previous versions, and I will raise the sample price to $100 and $125 respectively, to offset the labor of re-writing the definition files.

All best wishes,

Work progressing on new sample set

PostSat Mar 13, 2004 4:26 pm

Hi, everyone,

Jonathan and I started our collaboration nearly 4 years ago, using the First Baptist Riverside Schantz organ to make my first MIDI pipe organ recordings. Now it has entered a new stage as Jonathan prepares his first sampled instrument for Hauptwerk. New files from his revised samples will be forthcoming soon.

Thanks, James...

Jim and I have worked together a lot over the last few years, and I'm grateful for his help again. I've already listened to the demos, and am again surprised at the sounds that can be made with only a single stop!

1966 Schantz organ

PostTue Mar 16, 2004 7:45 pm

Congratulations Jonathan. I listened to the samples of the 1966 Schantz organ and I am impressed. I hope that the samples of the remaining ranks will be as good. I take it that the 1966 Schantz organ has a baroque organ specification. Currently the majority of sampled organs for Hauptwerk are baroque organs. Although I love baroque organs, I am looking forward to acquiring samples of a romantic organ so I am quite interested in your expanded version.

I also find it interesting that you have reduced the sample length to conserve some memory. I am glad you are taking this approach - this may prove to be a very effective compromise.

Do I understand that you will be making the Schantz organ samples available for Hauptwerk version 1 ?

Hello, Ken

Thanks for your kind reply

The Schantz does lean toward a Baroque spec, but has some definitely romantic leanings - enough so that it really does a decent job of the romantic stuff. (nice strings, decent 8' chorus reed in the SW)

I myself am looking forward to more romanitc intruments, but those sampling such beasts have chosen to stick with samples that are so long I cannot run them... so...

I will create a version 1.2 .organ file to start, but the new version is such a leap forward that I strongly encourage all to upgrade as soon as possible...
especially if you are wanting a realistic swell box and realistic tremulants (both necessary components for a nice slushy romantic organ)

I'll keep the forum informed, but expect my pace to slow as we get nearer to Easter - I am a full-time church musician after all!

Hello Jonathan,

I am new to the discussion board, and am trying to catch up with all of the experts. From what I have heard of the Schantz organ as you have played it in the recordings available on James Pressler's site, I am looking forward to your sample set release. I have always admired the sound of the Schantz organs, and would love to have that sound available. Thank you for your work in this area.

Yours in Him,

VOIX CELESTE!

PostWed Mar 24, 2004 5:09 pm

Well, friends,

I finally got a workable version of the Voix Celeste, and you can access a demo (kindly provided by James Pressler, my trusty Beta tester) on one of the links above.

As my fellow sampler from Silver Octopus mentions elsewhere on this forum, celestes are probably the MOST difficult to do... I spent the better part of a DAY on this stop (and there are a few notes that still need tweaking)

I am also finding that while my speed and quality increases, I am also more critical of my earlier attempts, so I may re-do some of the earlier
GT stops to reflect what I have learned. This week I hope to record more
SW stops and the remainder of the pedal, and finally tackle some reeds.
If all goes well, I hope to have the sample set ready for release by mid-April, shortly after Easter. The extended 3M set will follow shortly, and then the definition files need to be created for Version 2 of Hw.

I am still committed to making this set available at a lower cost, as well as slightly smaller sample lengths to conserve a bit on memory - so far I have been satisfied with the quality of the sound and believe this is an acceptable compromise for those who want to run the pregram on older PCs

Best wishes to all,

Hello Jonathan,

could you please give the complete disposition of the 1966 Schantz Organ and of the proposed 3-Manual version, or is there another way to get this disposition (a link to another page describing this organ)?

Thank you very much from an interested HW-user.

Schantz organ samples

PostMon Mar 29, 2004 6:18 pm

Hello Jonathan,

You made my day by posting the two stoplists! I can't wait for the final products. I am working on a three manual organ, and I can see that your three manual proposal would go a long way toward fulfilling my needs. Thank you.

Yours in Him,

Michael Moore
