What is ruispijp?

PostSun Mar 12, 2017 7:18 am

Some Dutch organs have a stop called Ruispijp. I've search online and in books, and I can't find a thing about this stop. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks!

I'm guessing it *might* be the Dutch equivalent of the German "Rauschpfeife", which I think is often a 2-rank mixture (12th/15th). [Anyone knowing better, please correct me.]

I love google translate which says it means "noise pipe".

I thought "rauschen" meant "to rustle" (as in paper, not cattle!).

Please don't confuse it with Ruislip which is a UK town just off the end of the M40.

OK, I'll get my coat ...

A Ruispijp is not always a 2-rank mixture, see the Rotterdam sample set where the Pedal Ruispijp is a 5-rank mixture with a Cornet-like composition. Often a Ruispijp is a continuous mixture, with no (or very little) breaks.

On German-Romantic organs, you often don't have a separate Quint 2 2/3' and Octave 2', but a Rauschpfeife which combines both ranks.
