David - What a thorough article: a gold-mine of information. I have only skim read, but I will be reading in detail later and I can see I will learn a lot and, like many interesting articles, it will prompt other readings to plug gaps in my knowledge. Many thanks for putting this together.

Kind regards,

James

I'm surprised that this topic and samples set hasn't had more focus - I sometimes wonder whether we have any organists left on the forum. Perhaps all the organists have migrated to contrabombarde?

... and speaking personally I'd love to see David (Agnus_Dei) visit us more often here on the HW forum.

19 posts in six years? .What's wrong with us then? .

But I suppose, not if it takes time away from making the lovely recordings you upload to CB!

A lot of information about the organ can be found in the booklet "The Armley Schulze Organ" by Kenneth I Johnstone, together with many interesting photos including some of historical aspects of the console pipework and action. The copy I have is from 1978, but there seems to have been a second edition in 1985. I expect both have been out of print for some time.

Maybe there would be enough interest for St Bartholomew's to reprint it (or maybe issue it as an e-book).

There is also Brian Hughes' "The Schulze Dynasty: Organ Builders 1688 -1880" which is still available (on Amazon for example, https://www.amazon.co.uk/Schulze-Dynasty-Organ-Builders-1880/dp/0954407415). This draws a lot of material from Johnstone's (on Armley) book and looks at some of the other instruments Schulze built in the UK.

I found it an interesting read.
