Hereford Cathedral Played on Four Channels?

PostSat Aug 25, 2018 2:32 am

I have the complete Hereford Cathedral sample set, and I recently set up my system with four channels instead of just two. Many sample sets give guidance as to which ranks should be assigned to the front or back, but Hereford doesn't. As an interim measure I just assigned everything to the back--but it sounds flat.

I have two questions:
  • Without guidance from the sample set, how do you people assign what where?
  • Does someone have a good Hereford assignment?
Thanks,
Dan

I also have a four-channel-setup, and in a stereo-set I always assign a complete division to a channel.

With Hereford I did as follows:

Great to Front
Choir to Rear
Swell to Front
Solo to Rear
Pedal to Front

If you want a similar sound to the real organ, you should assign all divisions except the Choir to Front. I tried that, but found it not practicable.
Best regards
Thomas

Hereford isn’t recorded in surround, so “front” and “rear” won’t really work.
Better would be to divide the manuals between your two stereo channels.
For example, Great and Choir on one channel (since the Choir is, in some ways a “miniature Great”), and Swell and Solo on the other channel. You could also divide the pedal ranks between the two pairs.

Maybe my message was misunderstandable, but that's exactly what I wanted to explain :D

I experimented a lot with Hereford and multiple channels. I had 6 channels (+ sub), and played around with all sorts of combinations, including mono (don't bother), 3 stereo pairs and various other options. In the end, the best, from a sounding convincing point of view, was to have one output group with 6 speakers in and let Hauptwerk use the default routing algorithm.

3 stereo pairs with one pair for each manual (I combined solo and choir) was ok, but occasionally it sounded muddy, worse with the more stops that were on.

Yeah, I put rear and front speakers together in one audio group for Hereford and it sounds fuller than dicing it up.

This subject is a hot topic for me also. I have the same sample set and 4 channels. To date I have had ranks from great/ solo to one pair of speakers and the swell/ choir to the other pair of speakers.

I want the all ranks assigned to the 4 speakers and for HW to do the maths using the algorithms as discussed above. I’ve tried to set this up yet can’t seem to get it working. Every time I try, then I get the whole organ but just through 2 of the speakers. My sound card is the M Audio Delta 1010LT.

Any help as to how I can achieve this will be gratefully received.

There are some clear instructions here https://www.paramountorganworks.com/downloads/ParamountAudio.pdf

You just need to do this for your 4 channels rather that the 8 plus sub in the document.

On Pg 3 of this document, pay attention to the “Routing and aux mix (advanced settings)” tab under Audio Outputs. You have to select the same group for all the all your assigned channels. The HW Algorithm you chose in the Audio Group menu is the one that gets used.

FYI, Hereford samples are recorded in stereo therefore 4 speakers is really just 2 (stereo) channels. For 4 active channels, you'll have to choose Mono instead of stereo. This usually isn't recommended since the gain in channel count is offset quite a bit by a lost of fidelity and presence.

Tried your advice and works a dream. The set sounds so good now! I've been trying to crack that for ages and it just shows how useful the forum is. 10 minutes work and job done. Thanks again.
