Concert Hall Recommendation

PostFri Feb 22, 2019 1:46 pm

Just for fun (at least at this point). Which sample set (and why) would you select for a university concert hall with 750 seat capacity? There is a strong music program with a very good orchestra, but no organ in the hall. However, the orchestra regularly programs large choral works and other music that requires an organ. No organ was planned for in the design of the building.

Partly a wish, the St Mary Mount Carmel in a new dry version. My church's Skinner is similar to the St Mary's. Our Skinner was originally the recital instrument for the University of Illinois' Smith Hall. Its' "Symphonic" specification works very well with choral and instrumental groups. I am prejudiced, but it is suited for the 750 seat location. Yeah, I know most organists would like a 2000 stop instrument but...

Bovenkerk Hinsz

Large instrument that will fit a 750 auditorium and a very clear Baroque sound as you'd expect in a collegiate setting. Reverb tails can be trimmed as desired.

We have recently been commissioned to provide a four manual Hauptwerk instrument for a concert hall currently under construction. More about that soon.

The primary sample set is to be Hereford Cathedral with considerable rebalancing, and substitution of a few stops or parts thereof. This sample set provides a very good acoustical perspective for live audio installation and a quite comprehensive specification to handle the multiplicity of tasks it's required to fulfill. These tasks will include choral accompaniment as well as teaching, practice and solo performance with and without orchestra.

Also to be provided are the sample sets of the Rotterdam Marcussen and Caen Cavaillé-Coll. If a single set for three manuals were to be provided the Portland Rosales would be an excellent choice.

PAB is a concert hall organ, and is quite suitable, out of the box (apart from the boxes, which need proper modelling, not simple volume control).
All it really needs, apart from adjusting the expression settings, is for the solo to be enclosed, which should have been the case in a normal organ, but for some reason, is not here.
It's worth a look.
