Harpsichord Instruments Sonus Paradisi

PostSun Apr 14, 2019 3:28 pm

Can anyone suggest either of these over the other from Sonus Paradisi:

Cembalo Ruchers Model vs. Cembalo Mietke Model?

They seem to be very similar in stops, etc.

In addition to ogran skills would love to practise the older pieces intended for harpsichord.

Thanks in advance if anyone can offer suggestions.

I wavered for a long time over which one to get, but I finally settled on the Cembalo Ruckers. The main reason I did is the more mellow timbre, which I prefer. One disadvantage is how the pedal is set up, I understand the Mietke has an independent pedal set up in the ODF, whereas the Rucker’s pedal works (I just assigned the pedal as another keyboard to operate one of the manuals), but it isn’t set up independently in the ODF. My feeling is that the Mietke is slightly more articulate as well. That being said, I don’t regret my choice - I feel the depth of character of the rucker’s tone is worth it.

I have no experience with the Ruckers, but I own the Meitke. I love it. With tracker touch keyboards, it's response makes you almost feel the plectrums plucking the strings! Bright and clear, the way I like it.

Thank you larason2 & scottherbert,

Both responses are helping me. Right now leaning to the Meitke.

The claviorganum was sampled at 44.1KHz and gives my audio interface fits when switching for some reason. Are both of these harpsichords 48KHz?

The Mietke is listed as 48 KHz resolution, it doesn’t say if the Ruckers is. I would email Sonus Paradisi to ask if you are interested.

I have the Mietke and love it. There's an expanded ODF which has pedals which is nice to use sometimes. It's a very decisive and clear instrument and the samples are very long. I hope SP does another harpsichord in the future. I find this much more fulfilling than the clavierorganum, for instance, as much more care was taken in the harpsichord sound.

I used to own a fine and nicely resonant harpsichord.

Despite the best recording of a harpsichord for Hauptwerk, you can never get the natural resonance response, which involves hundreds of natural over (and even under) tones, which are now being imitated quite realistically in piano sampling software. You could never run that in HW.

How to implement this kind of natural realism of the strings in a harpsichord for HW beats me. I haven't heard it anywhere.

HW harpsichord sound the most realistic, compared non-HW competition, but how to make them better would be great!.

Organ pipes and strings are in two different worlds indeed.

no need to have the same message twice (why that happened, I don't know), so I deleted it..

I used to have the expaned ODF with pedals, and enjoyed playing it. Somehow, it has disappeared from my system. Where could I find it again?

I make the pedal keyboard a second input to the first manual. Pull-down pedals.

The odf is right on SP’s website. Click on the updates tab.

You might enjoy the Ruckers Harpsichord Model for PianoTeq, which does model the sympathetic resonance of the strings. Playing it as a two-manual instrument is a little tricky, but can be done by running two instances of PianoTeq (one for each manual) within a DAW host.

I listened to the example files and I don't find it convincing at all. Better than a Casio keyboard, yes, but not nearly as convincing as the mietke. (imo). The resonance sounds contrived and many of the attacks don't seem real at all.
