Oloron-Sainte-Marie & Erfurt Büßleben - new sample sets

Hello everyone,
As probably most of you noticed (who follow me on Facebook), I released two new sample sets on my website https://piotrgrabowski.pl
Oloron-Sainte-Marie is a sample set of 24 stop French style organ built by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll in 1870.
Erfurt Büßleben is a sample set of 28 stop baroque organ built by Georg Christoph Stertzing in 1702.

For more details, video presentations please look at my website. Both are HW4 and HW5 compatibile and available in 6-channel format (3 pairs of: close/dry, front, rear microphones).

I waited with this announcement (I announced it on Facebook last Friday, one week ago), because when I was releasing free sample sets before, I always had problems with large downloads, exceeding bandwith limits etc. This time it wasn't any different. Sharing big files over Internet isn't easy task. I'm still struggling with it and probably I will delay some other releases to try to solve this issue.
Please be forgiving for any download issues. If you have any problems, please contact me directly via e-mail info@piotrgrabowski.pl

Current sale will end on 24th of February.

Piotr

Your new sample sets look and sound very promising, thank you for preparing them! Especially I am looking forward to the the new Mascioni set.
Regarding the download: I suggest that you prepare smaller chunks instead of one big file as other sample set producer do (a zipper like 7z can do this easily). So it is not that frustrating, when one of those chunks fails while downloading it. But to start all over again with a nearly 10GB file expierencing a sometimes very low available bandwidth is rather frustrating.

With one big file it is easier to install. That's why I suggest to use download managers, which prevent downloads from breaking. Anyway I will consider this in future.

Piotr,
You prepared us for the new era. You are charging for your sample sets, and the presentation quality has improved.

The simple screen layout is the best I have seen.

The sound quality is also impressive ..... until I played a Db chord on the Erfurt.

Correct me please .... but I calculate the temperament to be (starting with C) ....
+33 +7 +26 +44 +21 +35 +12 +29 +7 +18 +39 +17 +33.

The tuning of the whole organ is strange but Db and Ab are as flat as the pancakes I enjoyed last Tuesday.

I experimented with several other temperaments and the problem was solved.

If I am correct, could someone who has played the real Erfurt make a comment?

Thx
Stephen

I don’t own this sampleset, nor do I know the real organ, but as Piotr Grabowski writes : the temperament is very close to meantone, and your measurements confirm it... Dd is definitely not Dd but C#, Ab is G# as well. So no problem here...

A major Ab chord would be even crazier...

Stephen. I haven't calculated tempermament offsets in cents, but you're probably right. Of course no one is obliged to play original temperament, so here comes power of samplers when temperament can be easily changed. This temperament make even some Bach pieces not very enjoyable, but some scales sound really nice.

Both are excellent and very well done sample sets.

Erfurt's temperament is interesting and indeed "unusual". I've been using various mean tone temperaments rather than the original at times, and they typically sound good.

These two samples are great. Oloron is certainly the best sample for a Cavaillé-COll organ. Erfurt is very special with its tuning and temperament, but its really a very great sample. I've uploaded some demos on COntrebombarde (works from Pachelbel and Johann Michaël Bach with original temperament).Erfurt is full of surprises an sounds really well with Kirnberger or Werckmeister temperament. Don't forget that an organist plays with an organ and not against, some organs are not easy to understand, but are a real source of delight.

Comparing the CC samplesets I have -- Caen, St. Omer, Oloron, ND Metz, and St. Eucaire -- I'd have to put Oloron in 2nd or 3rd place behind Caen and maybe St. Omer.

That's my opinion mostly because it is a smaller, somewhat less capable organ, although surprisingly complete for the French symphonic basics. Occasionally you need a Positif and not just a coupling manual, but you can do a lot of music with Oloron.

But it's definitely the best CC for the price and a very nice addition.

Be prepared then for my next CC - Bégard. It is smaller than Oloron, but still very interesting and different (was built 30 years later). It is already working sample set, but I will release it not earlier than in 2-3 weeks. Still a lot of work need to be done.
I also plan to release composite CC sample set, which will combine these two with some extensions. Acoustics of both churches are quite similar, organ characters are different, so I believe it will make a nice composition.

The beautiful thing about Oloron is: this organ is still in its original state of 1870. In 150 years, this organ is untouched and exactly as maestro Cavaillé-Coll build it. This organ has a wonderful sound and is very well recorded. My compliments to Piotr!

My personal preference of Cavaillé-Coll sample sets is:

1) Aristide No. 1 v. 2. A composite sample set that comes very, very, very (,very!) close to the world famous organ in the St. Ouen of Rouen. A wonderful achievement.
2) ND Metz and St. Omer. Metz is so nice recorded authentically. Please use the original (so well balanced by Charles Mutin) version: you won't need the added stops of the extended version. And St. Omer is a very unique early Cavaillé-Coll, also very suitable for early repertoire and... César Franck!
3) Oloron. Not a very large organ, but the sound is wonderful. You can feel the mechanic / barker.
4) Caen. A large organ with a great disposition, and with a very good sound. One drawback: it sounds a bit 'polished': a bit too clean. No rough edges like ND Metz.
5) St. Eucaire. A nice smaller organ for practice purposes.

I'm enjoying Oloron-Sainte-Marie very much. This is no big deal, just a question:

I tried using the ventil controls instead of adding Anches with the HW master reversibles like I usually do (to fake it on non-CC samplesets), and realized that the Hautbois here is enabled with the Anches, which is unusual.

That prevents the frequently-used registration fonds + Hautbois with Recit reeds and upperwork prepared to be added/subtracted with the ventil.

Is the original organ's Hautbois on the Anches windchest?

Thank you.

I replicated the original behaviour, so it seems Hautbois is on the same windchest as flue pipes.
