Les' CC Organ

PostMon Jul 27, 2020 5:55 pm

Since I still have a lot of spare time during this pandemic, I finished another HW organ project.

This one, called "Les' CC Organ" is an imaginary medium-sized three-manual Cavaillé-Coll instrument. Although my software is free, you must purchase two small sample sets in order to use it.

Les' CC Organ uses samples from Piotr Grabowski's "Begard" and "Orolon" organs - both smaller two-manual Cavaillé-Coll instruments. I needed one more rank to complete my organ - a Clarinet - which comes form Piotr's free Cracow sample set. Hence, you need to have all three of Piotr's organs installed before loading mine. All of Piotr's organs can be found at

https://piotrgrabowski.pl/instruments/

I based my organ mostly on the great Cavaille-Coll instrument in St. Sernin's Basilica in Toulouse, France. I am somewhat familiar with this organ from my trips to Toulouse in my day job.

Piotr's samples are superb. I used only the ones recorded wet and closer to the organs. These still have lots of reverb. Piotr, by the way, has announced his intention to create his own larger organ form these two. His will likely use all three sets of samples and allow more of a surround sound result. Mine, on the other hand, easily fits into 16 GB of RAM at 16-bit resolution.

You can see screen shots, specifications, and lots of information on how I did this at

http://www.nightbloomingjazzmen.com/Les_CC_Organ.html

As always, I make my CODM file available for people to study. It is particularly interesting this time because you can see how I achieved the "Anches" ventil mechanisms.

I am enjoying going through all my French romantic music again while isolating at home - using this new HW organ. I hope you also enjoy it.

Les,

Thx for your enthusiasm.

I tried to install your CC organ, but ran into 2 problems.

1. An error message about package folder 53700 not being valid for the current version of HW.

2. Your link to your xml file seems to be faulty. Have you omitted "_1_0" ?

Stephen,

Thank you for this information. I am actually running the CC Organ on two installations in my home - one in HW4 and the other in HWV. However, there is always a chance there is an error in the release package. I will check on this and try to have it fixed later today.

Everything should work now.

This turned out to be pair of very minor problems:

1) I forgot to include the required "Package" file in the release. This is now fixed so there should be no more errors related to Package 537000.

2) It has been a while since I have posted a CODM file on my web pages - so I had forgotten that the CODM file names are not recognized as downloadable files in HTML. I have added a ".txt" extension to the file to solve this problem. The CODM file will now download. Please remember to remove the ".txt" extension before loading it into HW.

Finally!!! I have posted some demo recordings of my CC organ. After several people wrote to me recently and asked about this, I dug out some appropriate music and spent a few days getting things back under my fingers.

The first is a prelude by Langlais which was composed for just such an instrument. Next I included one of Marcel Dupre's "practice" chorale preludes. These are from one of the first volumes of organ music my parents bought me when I started lessons at the age of 11. They are meant to prepare students for studying the Bach choral preludes - but I find many of them to be gems in their own right - including this "In Dulci Jubilo." Alain's "Le Jardin Suspendu" is an impressionistic piece I have performed several times - but not for many years. It shows off the strings and several solo voices of the organ. I round it all off with the "March Aux Flambeaux" by Scotson Clark. This is a nice 20-minute mini-recital of music that fits the Cavaille-Coll vibe very well. I have included many more registration changes that I might for a real performance - but the idea here to to show off the organ, not the organist!

Prelude from Suite Medievale - Langlais

In Dulci Jubilo - Dupre

Marche Aux Flambeaux - S. Clark

All of these were recorded using only the acoustic of the samples - no extra reverb was added in the mixing.

As always, you can find all my organ recordings here:

and the CC organ can be downloaded here (after you buy and load two organs from Piotr):

Have fun and Happy New Year!
