We are pleased to present you our latest sample set: The unique german-romantic organ of the Pauluskirche in Ulm, built by Gebr. Link in 1910 and restored and extended by Orgelbau Thomas Gaida from 2013-2015. On our product page you will find a detailed description of the organ and the sample set.

This fanatstic organ not only is a great example of german romantic organ building, it has also become quite unique and extremely versatile through the extensions built during the restauration by Thomas Gaida.

Hello Reiner, thank you so much for this outstanding and high-quality sample set. This unique organ is really an enrichment for Hauptwerk. It's so much fun to discover the endless sound possibilities, especially with the fantastic acoustics of the church.

What a magnificent sounding organ!
I am only a couple of days into my free trial of thius Link/Gaida organ.
I have (too) many organs ... a couple of "big-uns", many freebies and many more trials. I don't think I have an organ that sounds this good. And there are some really interesting features of this organ that I have not seen in any other Hauptwerk organ. One is the ability to transpose keyboards independently. But with all the duplications across keyboards (see below) this feature can produce some really bad sounds. Beware!

But there is more to an organ than the sound, even if that sound is fantastic.

I do have some hesitations about the organ (apart from the price).

1. When I first installed the organ, the the front channel defaulted to OFF. This wasted 20 minutes of my valuable 2 weeks trial time, trying to work out why my front speakers were not producing any sound. If this is normal, I cannot understand why.

2. This might seem strange but the organ is not as big as it looks. First glance at the simple page might give the impression that this organ has over 200 ranks. But I think there are only about 60. So many ranks are repeated (some appear on every keyboard) and many appear in several octave variations. I can see this has some advantages. But if I could add a screen -- which I can't because the ODF is encoded -- I would create a screen with all the stops but without any duplications. My usual coupler set up can supply enough duplications for me. I normally try to make every organ look much the same on the screen, and to make sure I can read the stop names. The simple screen has 332 switches, all the same colour, necessarily with very small writing.

3. I have a plus and a minus about the CRESCENDO. On the plus side I was able to adjust the crescendo to whatever I wanted and then save that combination to any of my 11 combination pistons. I don't think I can do that with every organ that has a Crescendo.. On the minus side, since there are only 58 notes per keyboard I was able to set the 61st note of my HW keyboard to switch the crescendo ON and OFF. However when the Crescendo was ON, it was randomly switched ON and OFF as I played. I could not work out what was causing this so I have scrapped the Crescendo.

I will continue with my 2 week trial and hopefully get used to and appreciate some of the quirks of this organ.

Meanwhile the sound is fantastic.

Sorry for having wasted your time there. The problem, especially with three channels, is that you need to find a default setting that works for most users. The majority will simply run the output on headphones or a stereo system and then there is a big caveat to just mixing the three channels together: If you set all of them to about the same level the sound tends to get a bit muddy and phase cancellation effects occur. To remedy that I try to set the output to represent a distinct point where I personally like the sound best (btw, I mostly use headphones too). I must admit I overlooked the fact that setting the default to zero on any channel would completely silence that for those users who are distributing the channels over separate audio channels, which then of course is not desirable. I will change the default setting with the next update of the set. Thanks for pointing that out.

Indeed, 10 ranks of the organ are "auxiliary stops" that are separately registered at various octave pitches on each manual. This is part of the unique character of the organ and is the reason for the extreme flexibility that it offers. In a way each one of the resulting stops constitutes a floating division by itself! Obviously this results in a huge amount of stop switches, and I did my best to get them on the screen as legible as possible. Creating a simplified disposition by assigning these stops as fixed part of specific keyboards would greatly cripple the uniqueness of it and I have actually been asked not to make such a version, but to make sure the sample set reflects the character of the real organ, and I do fully agree with that. It would cripple the organ.

I do not know why the crescendo would be triggered without hitting the assigned keys, even though there is an extremely complicated internal switching logic with various internal keyboards to realize all the special effects. Nevertheless, that should not be able to produce false MIDI events that then trigger the crescendo, so I have no idea why that would happen.

Meanwhile the sound is fantastic.

I don't have experience with Reiner's new sample set myself, but you could potentially try temporarily turning on the "Diagnostics: log all MIDI messages received and sent" option on the "General settings | General preferences | Advanced ..." screen in Hauptwerk. That would show all MIDI messages that Hauptwerk receives, as well as what virtual controls those MIDI messages triggered, in case some unintended virtual control is getting triggered by a MIDI message. Use "Help | Show activity log" straight after the problem occurs to see the resulting logged entries.

This is what I did.
At 12:11 loaded HW config 0.
Loaded Recent/Gaida organ.
Pressed General Cancel.
Tested my C5 (61st note) of HW keyboard to make sure Crescendo was engaging and disengaging.
Turned the Rotary knob I have set up to control the Crescendo.

On second keyboard (should be Floating Swell) I played E3 lightly 4 times. Nothing happened.
Played same note with more force and Crescendo popped ON.

I have learnt something about my organ in doing this. I had no idea that pressing a note softly or hard made any difference.
I will have to investigate this.

Hi Stephen,

Looking at the log I can see that the organ responds to the inputs it received in the expected way. Walze is triggered by note-on channel 2 note 96 (highest note, which is what you had set it to), general cancel is triggered by note on channel 4 note 59 (which I assume is the MIDI your piston is sending out). Everything looks ffine on that side.

There seem to be some strange things in the input HW is receiving from your keyboards thouugh. To show this I reduced the log to the bare minimum to show what HW is getting (did not include the switches triggered by Hauptwerk, when you look at the log you can see that they are perfectly consistent):

You started by pressing general cancel:

Looks like you hit the piston 4 times. If not, and you hit it only once, you have some serious contact bounce here.

Here is something interesting: Either you have accidentally also hit the "b" on the keyboard, or note 95 got triggered by a fault in the keyboard. In any case, HW received a note on/off on note 95 also.

The interesting thing is: The MIDI in does not change on note 76, still default velocity 100, but you also get a note on on channel 2 notes 96 and 95! Could there be a mechanical issue in your organ that triggers the notes on the lower keyboard when you hit the upper one harder? You can definitely see on the timestamps that the keys are triggered at the same time as the e4 on the second keyboard.

Perhaps I have now been wasting your time!

Moving the Crescendo ON/OFF from 61st note to 60th note fixed the issue.
Moving it back to the 61st, the issue returned.

Tightening a few screws holding the right hand organ rest solved the problem.

It seems that when I played the top keyboard hard I vibrated the bottom keyboard rest against the top note.
