Sample sets needing > 120GB memory

PostWed Jan 17, 2024 10:44 am

I’d like to know which sample sets require more than 120GB of memory (at 20 or 24 bit) excluding the memory needed by the OS and Hauptwerk 8.

Answers would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I've never heard of one, which doesn't mean it doesn't exist, as I only have a little over 70 organs. MTH and PAB from IA fit in 96GB. SP and PG samplesets are all under 96GB. FP Regensburg, too.
Edit: For Windows only. Mac requires more memory.

I can't give an exact answer, since we are waiting on signed contracts...

But there will be at least one, maybe two coming from us that could very well require in excess of 128gb. A lot of it (in one case) depends on whether we decide to do 2 or 3 perspectives.... the other one, it just depends a lot on whether the ambient files (with longer reverb tails) add up to tip the scales.

If it's a Mac, then Melbourne Town Hall will likely need 128 GB to function at 24 bits. I don't think Apple sells a 96 GB option on any computer, but 64 GB will not work. 64 GB also doesn't work for the PAB at 20 or 24 bit, let me tell you! If this is your concern, there's a longer list of sets that won't work in 64 GB on a modern mac, but I won't bother enumerating or estimating any more unless that's your query!

On a PC, there is a lot more flexibility, so I would say there are none. 96 GB should fit basically anything currently available at 20 or 24 bit. Nancy I think is the heavyweight champion even above Melbourne Town Hall and PAB, and it tips the scales at 83 GB for all channels. I would be surprised if a 96 GB of RAM PC can't fit that all in and run. If not, then this would be the only one.

Haha, that's funny that Evensong is going to break the record! Usually American organs are drier, so it's harder for them to load up RAM too much. Or at least it was!

Billerbeck "beats" Nancy at 89GB (Edit: I only have the 6 channel version). The numbers I cited were for Windows, of course. If it's a current Mac, assume 50% more RAM is required.

A Mac Studio 12 core M2 Max can be had with 96GB, but that's going to support only about a 64GB sampleset.

Billerbeck requures 124GB for the full 8-channel surround version. It’s surely earned its crown as the behemoth of HW sample sets, for now…
Best wishes,
