getting there...

PostThu Oct 14, 2004 11:48 am

Thanks to lots of help from James Pressler, we have a working ODF....

At 40+ stops, this beast has gotten quite complicated....

I still need to tweak a few levels a bit - I've been playing lots of different organ literature on the set, as I feel it's the best way to find out if the stops are correctly balanced.

I have a wedding to play for, and a monthly staff/board meeting this weekend, so I think maybe lots of my time will be spent NOT working on this project <chuckle>

If all goes well, however, I should have the new ordering details up on the website by Monday, and have tested the install routine to my satisfaction.

My thanks to all of you who have sent PM of encouragement, and thanks for your patience - this has taken longer than I expected!

For various demos of the new 3 manual extended set, loud and soft, go to:

http://www.virtuallybaroque.com/inco163.htm

The whole concert is just 35 minutes, but you can pick individual tracks to hear special sounds, the first and last show off the Trompete Enchamade and Great Cornet, respectively.

I'm thrilled with the new stops, which I play from my two-manual setup. I love the swell Hautbois, the Chamade trumpet is spectacular, and of course the 32-foot stops are a lot of fun.

I particularly like Jonathan's samples because they speak quickly (with minimal latency), and they're compact--the 3M Schantz set fits nicely in my 1.5 GB system. Of course, Jonathan's pricing is also super-reasonable.

I received my FBR3M last night, loaded it with no problem.

This is a great set. Thanks Jonathan, for all your work on this sample set.

It's soft enough to put a baby to sleep, and can get loud enough for "Widor" to blow out all the windows in my house. (This is a good thing)

A Five-Manual Version

PostThu Nov 11, 2004 10:05 pm

Hi Jonathan Orwig,

I also would like to express my pleasure with your Hauptwerk Schantz Organ. It’s wonderful.

The comment from afwen (above) that the organ (40+ ranks) fits in less than 1.5 GB certainly caught my attention. Also, the fine demos from James Pressler showed that the organ sounded great. So I purchased it. I’m very satisfied.

However, never able to sit by with 500+ MB free, I have created a custom organ by combining some ranks from the Marcussen organ from Ariaan Hoogendijk with the Schantz. (I had already removed much of the reverb from the Marcussen files, so they match the Schantz quite well, I think.) I used the Schantz and Marcussen organs since they are more efficient in using RAM allowing for more ranks.

I now have the organ of my dreams (so far, at least). It has 74 stops and 60 ranks. I’m finally getting that really BIG organ sound that I love. The reed chorus on the SWELL is especially satisfying to me. And the Trompete en Chamade stop sure is spectacular, as are the 32’ pedal stops.

I will soon place on my website some recordings of this custom instrument, along with the complete .organ file and a screen shot of the Hauptwerk console. Here is a listing of the specifications of this 5-Manual organ as it currently exists:

Leo B Christopherson 5-Manual Organ Specification File

Wave samples come from:

Jonathan Orwig 1966 Schantz Organ (47 stops)
Ariaan Hoogendijk 1965 Marcussen Organ (21 stops)
Brett Milan Flute Celeste and Zimbelstern
Leo Christopherson Voix Celeste and Carillon

Requires MEDIUM width and LARGE height resolution
of 1600 x 1200. This organ needs most of my 2 GB RAM.

November 2004

Note: All console manuals are set to show 61 notes,
but the only stop that uses notes 60 and 61 is the
Zimbelstern on Manual Y.

POSITIV C1 -> G5, PEDAL C1 -> G3

....thanks...

PostFri Nov 12, 2004 12:28 pm

Thanks to all of you for your kind words - I've really enjoyed the set myself (now that I'm done with the darn editing!)

I must confess that I have tinkered with adding stops from various other sets as well - like Leo's incarnation, many of them were from the Marcussen as well as the FBR organ. I've also used certain of the St. Anne stops at various times in combination with the FBR and Marcussen.

I now find myself hoarding pennies so I can buy Brett's Skinner when it comes out, and buy 3 sticks of 1gb RAM <chuckle>. Since most all motherboards require registered memory over 1.5gb, this will NOT be cheap <sigh>

Best wishes to all,
