PipeTune - a tool for changing temperament of an organ

PostFri Aug 27, 2004 4:18 pm

Hello friends of Hauptwerk,

here is a small program for retuning Hauptwerk-Organs (and creating aliquote-stops from other ones). See the documentation within the package of the tool.

http://www.duemig-neufahrn.de/Orgel/PipeTune

I made it, since release of Hauptwerk2 delays and i am very interested in other temperaments than the equal one.

Happy experimenting - Martin Dümig

Ausgezeichnet, Martin!

I have heard the difference that a given tuning scheme makes. I also know the shortcomings of the egual-tempered scheme. I am eager to try some of the different tunings.

The ability to derive stops at different pitches is also a blessing. I do have one question for you.

Let us say that I want to derive the new Ott-Orgel stops you have set up in the file "Aliquot_Register_Ott.bat", AND I want to try the Werkmeister3 temperament. Does it make any difference which operation is done first?

Thank you, Martin, for such an interesting tool to make Hauptwerk even more amazing.

Hello Cole,

it makes no difference. PipeTune should always start with the original samples, since each computation results in some quality loss. You may call TUNE_OTT_ALIQUOT MeanTone4, which does create the aliquot-version and computes the stops in one step from the original samples.

Hello Hauptwerians,
Has anyone used pipetune yet? and if so, what is your experience?

Yes, I have used PipeTune. All of the organs I use are in the Kellner temperament. I really like the sound. I have noticed no degradation in the sound quality.

I am both pleased and amazed at what computers can do. Thank you, Martin and Martin.

Oh, by the way, I made a Word file to help me make the batch (.bat) file. I used the mail merge function in Word so all I really need to do is put the stop names in a data file and adjust the number of iterations in the main document.

I have used it, too - a good program, especially for its size.

I made a new stop using this program, but I'll not tell you what until next year...

I also did a presto-chango on the Zimbelstern. I lowered it an octave and also (I think) by a half octave. PipeTune is a wonderful tool; use it.

How did you make a zimbelstern?

I have a recording sample of one, and I can loop it... but how do you get it to play without having to assign a key to it and press that key?
(can we build intentional, user-specified, always working cyphers? haha)
