But we can't call it a piano-forte now, can we?

I came up with a simple solution:

"Memorial Concert Organ"

abbreviates simply as "MCO" which falls into the mouth easily.

Hi,

I just downloaded some of the mp3s of this organ being played... wonderful. As to naming such a sample set for such a marvelous creature I'm not sure any name will give it justice. Words like 'Grand', 'Majestic', or 'Fantastic' come to mind... Given that it is the Pipe Organ of the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall, the name should reflect the Béla Bartók portion of the name (at least). So perhaps the Béla Bartók Grand Symphonic Organ would suffice as a name, abbreviated as the BBGS?

What fun this is going to be to play one day!

Hmm, how to 'smartly reflect, but not name the venue' . . . to use the name Bela Bartok does have a nice ring to it, but it seems to me that since Bela Bartok Concert hall is the name of the venue it would not pass the first criteria, and as Paul Hodges has pointed out, the name Bartok has nothing to do with organs, or organ music.

Adri's suggestion of Memorial Concert Organ, does fit nicely in the mouth, but a memorial to what? this isn't a memorial organ to Bela Bartok to be sure, more likely this venue is intended to celebrate and promote national Hungarian music, past and future.

So I suggest the virtual organ might incorporate the name Laszlo Fassang; he is a Hungarian National who promotes Hungarian (organ) music past, and who promotes Hungarian (organ) music future. He is definately and closely associated with the concert hall organ, as well as being the music director of the Palace of Arts. Surely his name smartly refects, but does not explicitly name the venue.

So my entry would be the "Laszlo Fassang National Concert Hall Organ" or, LFO for short.

Your thoughts???

Perhaps improve it to "Melodious Concert Organ" (still MCO)?

A few more "serious" suggestions:

Grand Organ Machine = GOM (the Dutch word for gom is eraser and it looks like that this large instrument may just as well erase all other little organs)

Majestic Pipe Box = MPB (not this is not about sports)

Loud and Soft Organ = LASO (not be confused with lasso)

Five Manual Wonder =- FiMaWo or FiMaWon (this of course is a magic formula, that allows you to play any piece, no matter its level of difficulty, instantaneously on this instrument)

Concert Hall Organ = CHO (not to be confused with Chi, but equally powerful and energizing)

Grand Concert Hall Organ = GRACHO (not to be confused with Graucho Marx, who didn't play the organ anyway; the closest thing to resembling an organ pipe was his cigar)

Grand Concert Organ = GRACO (not to be confused with Geico's gecko, who may one day play the organ; you just never know)

Etc.
It's getting late...

The problem with Bartok is that to only way to refer to him or to his work in a manner that most people will identify that it is him, is to use his name. So the Bela Bartok National Concert Hall can hardly be referred to without at least using the name "Bartok". So my second suggestion is: The Bartok Grand Concert Organ, or BGC.
I know that Bartok did not compose for the Pipe Organ, but the Suite from The Miraculous Mandarin is played by Orchestra with Organ :-)

Of course, if you truly did not want to use Bartok's name but wanted to refer to the National Concert Hall you could use part of the Address and name the Organ the "Komor Marcell u.1 National Concert Organ", or simply the "National Concert Organ" ;-)

How about (one of) Budapest's nickname: "Pearl of the Danube"?
...or perhaps "Grand Organ of the Danube" (GOD)

My own suggestion:
BLO for Beautiful Large Organ. The B could also be translated as Bartok or Budapest.
BLO sounds like the verb "to blow" which describes well the organ.

another "MBO"...

PostTue Sep 02, 2008 5:17 pm

MBO = Mega Bartok Organ

(it would work better some years ago,
before the "gigabyte" memory chips
and "gigahertz" CPUs... :) but anyway,
"Mega" remembers "Bela" from "Béla
Bártok" and "megadolar = 1 million
dolars: stil lot's of money :D i.e. it's
a word that always sound big LOL!).

Bartok was Hungarian, so what about:

Hungarian Concert Organ = HCO

Hungarian Symphonic Organ = HSO

"Ivor Biggun" (IB)

But maybe the double entendre doesn't travel well.
