Trost offered a large number of colours, but the entire organ is quite delicately voiced. It is more or less a huge chamber organ. Because of the large size of the organ and the small size of the church, the mechanical action can be quite easily heard in the church. Because of the shape of the church, the listener is never far away from the organ.

Fascinating! Thanks for this information. Odd that the DVD producers found it necessary to goose up the reverb.

Organs are hard to record well!! It is all too easy to record an organ and have it sound much wetter and more distant than in real life. ( I have done it!) The recording from "the best seat in the house" rarely sounds as good as the real thing. Most average sound engineers don't have a clue as to how to go about recording an organ well (I've seen them try!) - it is a specialist skill.

Equally, HW demands a player's perspective to the sound - we all seem to prefer a sound a little closer to the pipes than the average listener does. The "dryness" of the Trost organ is more of a delight than a problem. It is an absolute pleasure to play. There are lots of big cathedral acoustics available to buy for HW. The Trost is something a little different and will change your approach to music you thought you knew well!!

Thank you for that explanation. In my opinion that is artificial, or at least different than what you hear in real life. For some organs it turns out better than in real life and for some worse. A sound engineer certainly has a difficult choice to make. The organ in my town has been recorded over 1000 times since 1969 and I know one of the technicians I talked to is still experimenting with microphone positions after several hundred sessions. I have yet to hear a recording that does justice to the brute force of the organ though and still keep the 6 second sustain as it should be.

In my opinion Dolph Thierry of STH has done great recordings of this beauty if I listen to cd's of Harm Hoeve and Marco den Toom. Maybe, someday he might get the permission to sample it for us

Yes, I talked to Dolph Thierry. He was the one that told me how difficult it was to capture the organ in Hasselt and how he is still working on making the perfect recording. Depending on the public expected to listen to the CDs he uses different placements and different microphones. Some like it all blury and 'romantic' and others like it crisp and clean.

I guess any organ is difficult to capture. The Bovenkerk in Kampen is also a very difficult organ as it is so high up and the church is so immense.

The same holds true for Waltershausen where the organ is placed very high in the church. I guess either you have really high microphone stands or you use one of the galleries or you hang them from the roof.

PS. There is a HW producer working on Hasselt, so no need for STH. Permission is the big word there.

Hello all,

the Trost organ has got an update which repairs the missing MIDI control of the separate extended tremulants for OW, HW and BW.

But after installation the tremulants cannot be operated like the other stops. They react only with "stop on" commands, tremulant on like tremulant off. So the stop switch must be turned off over and over again, so that he can be used for the next action. This is a little bit troublesome.

What could be the reason therefor, does somebody have an idea?
