New Mac OS X 64-bit technical preview available

Dear all,

The previous Mac OS X 64-bit technical preview for OS X 10.5 and 10.6 will expire on June 1, 2010. We have just updated the Hauptwerk downloads area with a new version that extends this expiration date. Please be sure to download and install the updated version in order to continue using Hauptwerk 64-bit on Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6 as a technical beta preview until Hauptwerk 4 is officially launched later this year.

You do not need to download the full Mac OS X installer, rather please only download the .dmg file for the 64-bit technical preview only which may be found beneath the Windows and Mac main download buttons. Click the small blue Download button and the download will begin. Once downloaded double click the .dmg file which will open a new window (if it does not automatically open a new window for you), then drag the Hauptwerk icon to your desktop and then double click this desktop icon to launch Hauptwerk. You may then delete the original downloaded .dmg file. You may also delete the previous Hauptwerk 64-bit version from your computer without affecting your Hauptwerk installation.

We also would like to point out that users should download and install the latest Hauptwerk USB key drivers to accompany the new Hauptwerk 64-bit OS X installation. Details may be found on the downloads page at http://www.hauptwerk.com/downloads as well as the Technical FAQ page at http://www.hauptwerk.com/faq/technical/#3.

Thank you and we hope you continue enjoying this beta release.
Regards,
Brett Milan

Hi Brett,

Thank you for the update of the 64-bit preview version!
I also have updated the usb-driver program according to your advise.

Are there changes other than the expiration date?

Is the menu item "Set current organ as a stand-by organ" still broken ? Is there an XML file & text editor hack to add an organ to the standby list?

Thanks,
Paul

Hello Paul,

There are no changes other than the expiration date. The Stand-by slot issue will be resolved in Hauptwerk 4. Please see this post: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5788&start=0&hilit=combination+greyed#p40217. There are no text edits possible since this issue relates to the QT software which Hauptwerk's menu options rely upon and these settings are not user editable I'm afraid.

Please remember this is a beta technical preview, we will have a fully supported OS X 64-bit version available along with the release of Hauptwerk 4 which will address these and other issues in the current 64-bit version.

I hope this helps.

Brett Milan

Hi Brett

I have been running the Mac OS X 64-bit technical preview (June 1 expiry version) with no problems and without having updated the USB key driver. Do I need to update the driver before now updating the 64 bit Preview?

Also, despite repeated attempts during today, I cannot access the ftp link for the USB download as provided - perhaps this link is not accessible for some geographies ?

So I've Googled "mac OSX 64 bit USB driver" and have a hit with Apple at:

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/d ... ndex2.html

where a likely download in the last page of the 3 page list appears to be:

"PL2303 USB to Serial Driver 0.3.1
"02/04/2008 Supports different manufacturers of PL2303 based USB to serial dongles like ATEN, IOData, Elcom, Itegno, Ma620, Ratoc, Tripp, and more. (Freeware) " (124k)

Is this the same driver as you have specified ?

Regards,

Rick

Hello Rick,

I've just checked, and the driver download link is working properly for me:

ftp://ftp.aladdin.com/pub/hasp/Sentinel_HASP/Mac/Sentinel_HASP_RTE_Installer.dmg

In case it helps, it's the 'Sentinel_HASP_RTE _Installer.dmg' item on this page:

http://www.aladdin.com/support/hasp-srm/enduser.aspx

The correct driver isn't currently available for download from any other locations to my knowledge.

The new 64-bit Hauptwerk tech preview will probably work with the previous drivers that you already have installed in day-to-day use, but some users reported that they had problems applying licence updates to their USB key (e.g. if you buy a new sample set), so this build uses a later version of the HASP libraries, which might need the latest driver in order for licence updates to work reliably.

It won't do any harm to keep using the previous drivers for the moment, but if you find any problems (especially with applying licence updates to the USB key), then try installing the updated drivers from one of the above links.

(The later drivers will be installed automatically with Hauptwerk v4's installer.)

Let us know if you still have problems downloading them, and if necessary we could probably host them somewhere temporary for direct download.
Best regards,
Martin.

Hello Imre,

It is October 1. This is also listed just below the download in the information text.

Hi Martin

Thank you for the quick reply. This morning I was able to access the "www.aladdin.com/support/ .. " link you provided without a problem, but again I was unable to access the USB driver download link as you provided or from the link on the downloads page - despite trying a number of times using the Mac and also a Win7 pc. The browser did not proceed beyond the status message line "connecting to ftp aladdin .. " and a blank screen, using Firefox v3.6.3 on the Win7 pc. Also, trying to access the link caused Safari v4.0.5 on OSX 10.6.3 to give up with a "cannot display page" message.

However, after some more tries, the Win7 pc successfully connected and eventually presented the file-save prompt, and then successfully completed a very slow download. Now, an hour later, clicking on the USB driver download link brings up the file-save prompt in about 15 sec. So it would appear that some networking issue somewhere has now cleared itself. (Safari now also accesses the USB download link from your post ok, and without excessive delay.)

I have now successfully installed the updated 64 bit Technical Preview Beta and then also updated the USB driver - all is working ok. So I'm now looking forward to v4 by October to remove the contact-bounce problem on my Allen console.

Thanks again for your first-class support,

Rick

For other mac users out there having trouble with the ftp link to the aladdin site: I've generally had trouble connecting Safari via ftp://, including downloading organs from the Hauptwerk site. But what has always worked for me is to go to the Finder (desktop), and use "Connect to Server..." in the Finder Go menu, and paste in the ftp:// address there.

Specifically in this case, in the Finder, select Go -> Connect to Server... In the dialog box that appears copy and paste "ftp://ftp.aladdin.com/pub/hasp/Sentinel_HASP/Mac". In the next window that appears, select "Guest" the press the "Connect" button. Within a minute or so a network disk called "Mac" should appear with a few files, including Sentinel_HASP_RTE_Installer.dmg, which is the one we want. Then simply click and drag this file to your hard disk.

It's good practice to eject the Mac disk when you're done with the copy.

Hope that helps!

Upgraded in 64-bit Preview Version 5 without any problem (excepted my MOTU Micro Lite being blocked... and restored after I plugged it off then on). I even didn't have to update the USB key driver. 8)

To connect FTP from Safari, make sure the URL ends in a "/". Add one if it isn't there. Safari appears to require it for some reason. Then the linked source will end up properly as a mounted drive.

I have downloaded the Mac driver "Sentinel_HASP_RTE_Installer.dmg". Now, what do I do with it? I've searched the Hauptwerk website for installation instructions to update my current driver but couldn't find any - I'm probably looking in the wrong places.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ken

Hello Ken,

Once you have downloaded the .dmg file simply double click it to run the installer and follow the installation instructions. Once it finishes the drivers will be updated and that will be all you need to do. You should also reboot the computer for good measure.
