Another organ near St Anne's Moseley, Birmingham

PostTue Sep 04, 2012 1:46 pm

I've posted the building of my Hauptwerk organ on the DIY console section, so this is a cross-posting of my final update there. Here are a few photos of the finished organ, along with some representative j-organ skins that I designed myself for my favourite organs so that I could position stops exactly where I wanted them on my touchscreens. I live a short hop from St Anne's Moseley (yes, that organ) and would be happy to be contacted by PM from anyone interested in visiting my organ (and potentially I might get access to the St Anne's organ too).

Tremendous work Organorak, with a lot of attention to details - re-designing the jambs must represent a lot of hard work...

Have you done all of it by yourself, or did you get some help to complete it?

All myself - I had to learn a lot of woodworking skills from watching Youtube videos, as I'd never built anything more than a set of shelves before in my life and I have a desk job so had to fit building this very much into my limited spare time. I spent a year designing the organ, including creating the j-organ graphics, even before gettings as far as ordering a monitor or purchasing Hauptwerk, so a lot was "taken on trust" that the more complex bits, like multiple monitors, j-organ interfaces and MIDI-controlled pageturns would work. And in the middle of construction family events forced a slower pace as the next photo shows. Thankfully pretty much everything works fine now even though it was fiddly at first.

His favourite composer is very clearly Rheinberger, which I didn't previously play much of and it's meant I've had to learn some more pretty quickly. And he dislikes Dupré but enjoys Howells.

I was going to comment, another virtual organist, except this little one is for real. Congratulations on both accounts.

Not sure how this applies, but while my wife was carrying our two children, each time she played (really good) music (for her and their benefit she said). To this day, they both like music, the good stuff.

What an incredible piece of work Organorak. For somebody who had few woodworking skills you have created a truely magnificent instrument that anyone would be proud of. Particularly like what you have done with the touch screens.

@ruckpositv:
Do you refer to the organ or the baby? Both are sometimes loud, sometimes silent, sometimes crying, sometimes sleeping, but always sweet.
I'd like to see a recent picture of the baby.

He's actually no longer a baby but a two year old toddler with his own younger brother. But he still loves playing the organ, and recently gave his one year old sibling his first organ lesson. Here's the video:
