128 GB server: what do you think?

PostMon Oct 17, 2016 1:08 pm

I am updating to 96 - 128 GB. This server was suggested to me by a computer friend. Wondering if any of you have thoughts about this. It certainly would be an inexpensive way to proceed. Many thanks in advance for your help and expertise. -Jerry

Servers, due to their fans, are generally noisier than PC's for instance. I've also heard they are slower. They are designed for other purposes as compared to a "normal" (whatever that is) computer.

Thanks, Ed. This is the type of feedback I need to get before doing something that I may regret.

Working on an upgrade to my Hauptwerk system. The following is a proposed build using an i7-5820K, which I understand will run 128GB of RAM. Any comments or suggestions would be most appreciated. Many thanks!

Hello Jerry,

[I've merged your two similar topics together, to keep the discussion in one place.]

From a quick trawl through the results of a forum search for 'server' (which does also find rather a lot of irrelevant entries relating to Web servers), these were a few of the more-recent previous topics that were (at least partly) relevant to using PC server hardware/platforms and/or 128 GB:

Hello Jerry,

I missed a video card. This processor has no video capabilities. Take f.i. a Nvidia GT710 silent (no fan).

And the new MX300-serie SSD of Crucial has a better price/performance; http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/storage-ssd-mx300

Looks like a solid build! Do you know that the case (which is perfect by the way) is quite large? You will have lots of unused space. May be something to consider when you don't have much space for the PC.

Include a simple, passively cooled graphics card as suggested and you have a very good system (which should not be much more expensive as the server).
