Easy Reverb

PostThu Apr 13, 2017 11:47 am

Want an easy solution for adding reverb to Hauptwerk? Stephen Schaub has a tutorial for using Cantabile Lite (a free VST host) with Hauptwerk. Here is a link:

http://stephenschaub.org/hauptwerk/ReverbSetup.php

(Note: the video on this page may not be available on Apple devices because Flash player is required.)

I have been tearing my hair out trying to use Reaper as the host. It is a popular and powerful DAW, but it is VERY complex. I was able to get Cantabile Lite set up with my favorite convolver East West Quantum Leap Spaces in less than five minutes. More on QL Spaces later.

Cantabile Lite 2.0 can be downloaded from here:

A couple of good YouTube tutorials are here:

If you have purchased a Focusrite audio interface and registered it, you can get a free license for a superb algorthmic reverb, R2. Log in to your Focusrite account. R2 was created by a former Lexicon engineer and is comparable to Lexicon PCM reverb. You will need to purchase an iLok if you don't already have one.

Not all convolvers are created equal. The best is undoubtedly Altiverb, but it is very expensive. This is the reverb Pierre Fracalanza uses. Another good friend Steve Schlesing suggested EW QL Spaces. It is available for under $200 US. An iLok is also required for this product. To my ears, Spaces sounds very liquid, warm, and realistic. It is far better sounding than other convolution reverbs that I have tried. It is also very easy to use. I like the "S. Cal.Hall Mid Stage TS FR 3.5s" IR.

This looks very interesting particularly for dry sample sets.

I've been unable to (quickly) find a manual for Cantabile - I wanted to see if it can handle multiple output channels from Hauptwerk. Do you know if it can do that and if it is as simple as it appears to set up a stereo pair?

Many thanks.

Hi Iain,

Short answer is yes. An online guide is here:

https://www.cantabilesoftware.com/guides/

It is for version 3, but should be informative for version 2.0 as well.

Iain,

A correction on my comment regarding multichannel operation: with Cantabile 2.0, the free Lite version only supports two channels, the Solo version is required. Cantabile Lite version 3.0 does appear to support multiple channels.

Continuing with the discussion of multichannel operation, I have just set up my Hauptwerk system with four channels, two front and two rear. The front channel reverb uses the Spaces S.Cal Mid Stage IR. To emulate surround, the S.Cal Full Orc IR was set to100% wet and the pre-delay was increased. After tinkering with the balances, a credible four channel surround effect was possible. Similar results should be doable with other convolvers. Altiverb 7 XL with 5.1 surround support would undoubtedly be the ultimate.

As an aside, I have come to prefer a single pair of high quality front speakers rather than multiple pairs of powered monitors (HR824) for use with dry organs. For wet sampled organs, two channels are usually recommended in order to preserve phase relationships. In general, I prefer headphones and these are my benchmark when setting up loudspeakers.
